Job Description

Traveling Switchman (Rail Operations Specialist)
Location: Based in Birmingham, AL (75% Regional Travel)
Pay: Competitive Technical Rate (Commensurate with Rail Experience)
Job Type: Full-time

The Standard of Excellence
At Road & Rail Services, our Traveling Switchmen are the backbone of our specialized logistics network. This is a role for seasoned rail professionals who thrive on the autonomy of travel and the precision required in complex yard operations. We provide the equipment and the projects; you provide the expertise that ensures every move is executed with FRA-compliant precision.

The Role: Precision Rail Operations
This is a technical position requiring immediate proficiency in switching and terminal operations. As a Traveling Switchman, you will deploy to various industrial facilities and rail yards within our network to lead and execute:

  • Advanced Switching: Independent execution of railcar movements, including coupling/uncoupling and positioning locomotives in diverse industrial environments.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Immediate identification and on-site resolution of mechanical issues (stuck hand brakes, air hose damage, etc.).
  • Operational Communication: Using industry-standard hand signals and radio protocols to coordinate fluid movements with ground crews and engineers.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintaining a 100% "Safety First" posture in strict accordance with FRA regulations and site-specific safety protocols.

Professional Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

  • Proven Rail Tenure: This role is reserved for candidates with 2+ years of verifiable experience in rail switching within a yard, terminal, or industrial environment.
  • Operational Readiness: Immediate ability to demonstrate proficiency in lining switches, hanging air, and bleeding cars without basic training.
  • Travel Commitment: Ability and willingness to travel 75% overnight. We are looking for "Road Warriors" who enjoy the variety of different sites and the independence of travel.
  • Physical Capability: High-level physical stamina to climb, bend, and work outdoors in all Southeastern weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Credentials: Valid Driver's License and High School Diploma/GED.

Why Seasoned Switchmen Choose Road & Rail

  • The Travel Lifestyle: We provide per diem and travel support, making this a lucrative opportunity for those who prefer the road over a stationary yard.
  • Veteran-Ready Culture: We value the discipline and leadership found in the military-your rank and experience are respected here.
  • Career Progression: We prioritize promoting our experienced field staff into Crew Leader and Supervisory roles.
  • Full Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, 401(k), paid holidays, and vacation.
  • Equipment & Gear: All PPE provided, plus an annual steel-toe boot allowance.

Ready to trade the yard for the road? If you've got 2+ years of switching under your belt and the "Road Warrior" spirit, we've got the equipment and the miles waiting for you.

Primary Hiring Area: Birmingham, AL

We're also welcoming applicants from nearby communities within roughly 50 miles, including Hoover, Bessemer, Alabaster, Pelham, Trussville, Leeds, Gardendale, Helena, Fultondale, McCalla, Moody, Chelsea, Irondale, Center Point, and Homewood, Alabama.
