Responsibilities
- Independently administer a variety of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and injections per provider orders, including hormonal and non-chemo therapies.
- Access ports (port-a-caths), PICCs, and Hickman catheters; perform venipuncture, catheter dressings, and collect labs via implanted venous access devices.
- Maintain accurate, concise patient records on condition, treatments, medications, and responses; monitor intravenous therapies and patient responses to treatment.
- Notify the Medical Oncologist or Nurse Practitioner of unusual events and initiate emergency action when necessary.
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers about medications, treatments, expected responses, side effects, disease process, nutrition, activity, and physical adjustments related to the disease or its treatment.
- Verify informed consent prior to administering chemotherapy; demonstrate knowledge of proper handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous drugs and appropriate PPE; maintain a safe environment and comply with policies and procedures.
- Maintain proficiency in Epic EMR and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Proficiency with port access, PICCs, and Hickman catheter care, including dressing changes and labs via ports and catheters.
- Knowledge of chemotherapy handling and safety, including proper PPE and hazardous drug protocols.
- Ability to educate patients and families about treatments, anticipated effects, and self-care.
- Proficiency in Epic EMR for documentation and orders.
- Ability to work in a hospital med/surg oncology setting and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work the assigned day shift schedule as outlined.
