Description of Work

Position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the North Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn, NC. This position will report to the Franklin County Maintenance office but will perform work in Wake County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Employee will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Employee will be subject to emergency call back and scheduled nightwork during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have the ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties.

Must be able to legally operate a Class A motor vehicle with N endorsement and/or perform flagging operations to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective written and oral communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety-toe shoes are required.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position.

Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:

  • No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
  • Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
  • If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $35,596 - $62,294

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and experience in installation of traffic control
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
