The posting will fill two vacant positions 60022865 and 60022869.

This work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Rutherford County. This position will report to the Rutherford County Maintenance Office. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand and power tools. This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 - $33,902.00- $59,327.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Education Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
