Summary

Actively supports and upholds the City’s mission and core values. This internship is designed for a student currently enrolled in Civil Engineering, Planning, Transportation Planning, or a closely related program. The position reports directly to the Multi Modal Transportation Planner and Senior Transportation Engineers, contributing to a wide range of transportation-focused tasks while providing excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.

This role offers hands-on experience across multiple facets of municipal transportation operations, including work order development, field inventories, Safe Routes to School initiatives, data collection, GIS projects, traffic signal operations, and citizen request tracking. The intern will also conduct literature reviews, support emerging research topics, and safely operate a City vehicle in the performance of assigned duties. Additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed to support the Transportation Team’s evolving priorities.

Examples of duties

• Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
• Work Order preparation – developing citizen and internal requests for service into work orders for the Streets Section of Public Works. This often involves field measurements, data review, plan development and work order system entry and tracking.
• Field Inventories – collecting field measurements of various components of City infrastructure – examples are measuring sidewalk widths and lengths, measuring roadway marking and striping layouts, street lighting and signage.
• Safe Routes to School – field conditions review, measuring and counting student activity, development of safe walking route maps and coordination with appropriate school staff and administration.
• Data Collection – setting, monitoring and retrieving various field data collection equipment like pneumatic road tubes, radar counters and travel time studies and video equipment.
• Literature Review / Research on various emerging topics in anticipation of development of new and revised procedures, policies and standards.
• Geographic Information Systems – basic GIS mapping and database manipulation projects as assigned.
• Traffic Signal Operations – field observations, field measurements, timing parameter calculations and travel time runs are typical activities.
• Request Tracker – responsible for monitoring and responding or assigning citizen requests as they are submitted through the City’s webpage.
• Safely operates a city vehicle in the performance of business-related activities and assigned duties.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Enrollment in a college or university program in Civil Engineering, Planning, Transportation Planning, or a related field.
• Valid driver's license.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• No prior experience required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license. Driving is an essential function in order to conduct field visits.
• Must maintain a safe driving record, as verified by a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
• Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
