This position is located at the Ohio Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Center at 1323 West Blee Road, Springfield, OH 45502

What You Will Do:

  • Airspace & Deconfliction Management Integrate Ground-Based Detect & Avoid (GBDAA) radar feeds, ADS-B inputs, and LAANC flight approvals to ensure aircraft separation during operations. Supporting uncrewed aircraft operations and testing.
  • Drone & BVLOS Operations: Manage remote Drone-in-a-Box (DIB) and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations using Skydio Dock systems and cloud command platforms for automated corridor mapping, bridge, roadway, and construction monitoring.
  • Flight Roles & Planning: Serve as Remote Pilot-in-Command (RPIC) or Visual Observer (VO); construct 3D photogrammetry routes and automated inspection grids; perform preflight, in-flight, and post-flight checks for rotorcraft and fixed-wing platforms.
  • Mission Preparation & Coordination: Conduct pre-mission planning and safety risk assessments, review weather, file NOTAMs, coordinate airspace with controlling agencies, and brief operation teams and requestors.
  • Data Processing & Reporting: Organize, process, and deliver acquired data to the UAS Data Manager; prepare and maintain flight logs, risk assessments, equipment condition reports, accident/incident reports, and inventory records.

Who We Are Looking For:

  • Licensing & Travel Requirements: Must hold and maintain an active FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate; possess a valid driver's license (or provide own transportation); and be willing to perform statewide travel with overnight stays as needed.
  • Technical Skills: Experience operating rotorcraft/fixed-wing UAS platforms, personal computers/tablets, and specialized software (e.g., Microsoft Suite, UGCS, and various UAS flight command software). Experience operating Skydio x10 aircraft and other platforms greater than 55 lbs. Experience operating aircraft in a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) environment. Experience conducting two-way radio communications with aircraft and/or aircrew.
  • Knowledge Base: Strong understanding of Part 107 safety practices, state/federal government structures, and agency-specific UAS policies and procedures. Knowledge of GIS and drone data collection and processing.
  • Analytical & Operational Abilities: Demonstrated ability to gather and process data, define problems, draw valid conclusions, perform basic calculations (fractions, decimals, percentages), and compile clear, concise reports.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal skills to cooperate with team members on group projects and handle sensitive inquiries from public officials and the general public professionally.

Qualifications

2 yrs. exp. as Transportation Technician 1, 85873, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.

-Or completion of associate degree program in engineering technology; 5 yrs. engineering related technical experience in simple & standard construction/ rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple & standard civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.

-Or 7 yrs. trg. or 7 yrs. exp. in engineering related technical experience in simple & standard construction/ rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple & standard civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with positions to be filled. Note: the official position description on file with the Ohio Department Of Administrative Services is to reflect, in the minimum acceptable characteristics, the required technical experience. Only those applicants possessing the required technical experience listed in the position description are to be considered for any vacancies posted. Supplemental Information

This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards.

All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period.

Position will be filled pursuant to the provision of the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.
