The San Antonio District is looking for a Transportation Specialist I, II, or III to join the District’s Central Design Section. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is eager to learn, grow, and continuously enhance their technical skills. This role will strengthen your PS&E production expertise. You will get full exposure to the entire PS&E process. You will learn to design plan sets that meet TxDOT design criteria using the latest workflows in OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and MicroStation CONNECT. You will gain hands-on experience automating repetitive tasks using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) within ORD. You will contribute to Digital Delivery initiatives through 3D roadway modeling and play a key role in shaping the future of project delivery.

Beyond design, you will also gain valuable construction insight by supporting Area Offices with design guidance, Change Orders and Requests for Information (RFIs).

Annual Salary Ranges:

Transportation Specialist I (B19) - $48,244- $76,028

Transportation Specialist II (B20) - $51,158- $81,351

Transportation Specialist III (B21) - $54,278- $87,046

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Specialist I

• Assists with project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
• Develops site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software.
• Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
• Inspects roadways and evaluates road conditions.
• Evaluates and analyzes design issues.
• May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
• Researches and analyzes incoming correspondence, reports and other written material.Reviews and revises Plans, Specifications & Estimates and project designs for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, roadway illumination, traffic management systems or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
• Reviews environmental documents.
• Trains and makes training-related recommendations to staff on new operations.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Specialist II
In addition to the duties listed above:

• Assists with project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
• Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature.
• Reviews area office contract submissions and coordinates process with area engineers.

Transportation Specialist III
In addition to the duties listed above:

• Assists in overseeing project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
• Evaluates and analyzes complex design issues.
• Researches and evaluates data, interprets and analyzes results, prepares reports and recommends solutions to problems.
• Serves as technical member on transportation-related projects.
• Writing, reviewing and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards and procedures
• Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience

Transportation Specialist I:2 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

Transportation Specialist II4 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

Transportation Specialist III:5 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
