Summary

The City of Lincoln Department of Transportation and Utilities is seeking a skilled, motivated, and highly responsible individual to join our Transportation Team. The Transportation Department’s mission is to responsibly deliver, enhance and maintain vital infrastructure and services for the good of our community. The Transportation Planner will advance this mission by planning, evaluating, and administering the City's transportation programs with a focus on active and multimodal system improvements. The Transportation Planner’s work will include leadership and oversight of the shared mobility programs in the City of Lincoln. Opportunities to plan, evaluate, and recommend infrastructure improvements consistent with the Safe Streets Lincoln – Vision Zero Action Plan will also be a key focus of this position. Additional responsibilities include the following:

  • Analyze and develop strategies for citywide pedestrian safety initiatives, including the Safe Routes to School Program.
  • Integrate data collection, national best practices, and policies into transportation projects.
  • Lead outreach and engagement with advisory committees, neighborhood groups, community partners, and residents.
  • Lead the Safe Streets Lincoln Committee and drive implementation of identified safety projects and countermeasures.
  • Represent the City at Pedestrian Bicycle Advisory Committee meetings and related events.
  • Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map, analyze, and manage spatial data to support safer, more efficient transportation planning.
  • Create, refine, and apply data-driven criteria to prioritize and program transportation projects.
  • Prepare and support development of requests for proposals/qualifications (RFP/RFQ) submittals.
  • Apply for and administer transportation-related grants.
  • Build and maintain effective professional working relationships with City officials, staff, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in one of the social or engineering sciences.
  • At least 2 years of experience in transportation planning

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience applying for grants and meeting grant implementation requirements.
  • Passion for multimodal transportation and safety for all road users.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting community engagement and outreach.
  • Ability to use GIS to map spatial data to plan and prioritize transportation projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent transportation.
