OF ROLE (Medians and Bikeways)
Under direct supervision, the Transportation Maintenance Technician I performs a variety of entry level to semi-skilled maintenance tasks in the areas of maintenance, landscaping, construction and equipment operation for City of Boulder transportation corridors, multi-use paths, and medians.

MEDIANS AND BIKEWAYS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs mowing, trimming, vegetation and debris removal along transportation corridors, multi-use paths, and in median and pocket park areas
  • Identifies hazards and additional maintenance needs to maintain the health of various types of turf, shrubs, and trees in assigned areas, and clearly explain these needs to lead staff or supervisors.
  • Operates tools and equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks and may perform minor and preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Promotes a safety culture assists in ensuring others do so to prevent injuries and illnesses.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations with various equipment. Responds to 100% of snow shifts when called from October through April.
  • Responds to 25% after-hours work during irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
  • Knows and complies with all city and department policies and participates in professional trainings and development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to effectively communicate needed repairs to supervisors.
  • Ability to learn to operate a variety of landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to remain alert to conditions and events occurring in right-of-way.
  • Ability to take proper safety precautions to prevent accidents including use of all required safety equipment and following all safety regulations, policies, procedures and reporting requirements. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Knowledge of safe use of hand tools, commercial and light duty vehicles, outdoor power equipment, and trailers.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have a maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to operate front-end loader, skid-steer loader, or other motorized equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand maps, blueprints, and other construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of basic asset management software.
  • First Aid with CPR and AED Certification.
  • OSHA 30-hour Training Certification.
  • One (1) year experience with snow operations.
  • One (1) year landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor, physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant, tree, and weed identification.
  • One (1) year experience in heavy construction.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License, Class A or B with tanker endorsement and without restrictions or Permit or new hires have ability to obtain within nine (9) months with supervisor approval.
  • American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Flagger Certification or equivalent certification as a traffic flagger or new hires have ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
  • Front-End Loader Certification or new hires have ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
  • Skid-Steer Loader Safety Training Certification or new hires have ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
  • OSHA 10-hour Training Certification or new hires have ability to obtain within one (1) year.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Safely works in and around moving traffic and in congested work zones. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to operate equipment, and review evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions and in confined spaces and to operate equipment while working in and around moving traffic. Upper body strength to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.
  • Work Environment: Works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions in and around moving traffic, and in confined spaces. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Ability to work irregular hours, that include weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Hand and power tools, long-handled tools, jackhammer, chainsaw, tamper, grinder, compressor, safety devices, utility truck, single and tandem-axle dump trucks, backhoe, loader, two-way radio, telephones, calculators, computers and copy/fax machines.
