Join the TxDOT Fort Bend Maintenance Team! Are you interested in a hands-on role helping to maintain and improve some of the most vital roadways in Fort Bend County. The Fort Bend Maintenance Office is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team of approximately 30 full-time employees. Our team handles a wide range of roadway maintenance duties, including pothole and edge repairs, brush clearing, sign installation (small and large), and operating both light and heavy equipment. Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I include:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.

  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.

  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.

  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Basic knowledge of roadway operations.

Some knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work

  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies, and requirements

  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes

Some skill in:

  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments

  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade

  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment

  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively

  • Follow verbal and written instructions

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.

  • Feeling - determining size, shape, temperature or texture of objects

  • Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words

  • Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication

  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers

  • Close Visual Acuity - work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts

  • Visual Acuity - operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
