Are you energized by solving complex geotechnical and pavement design and construction engineering challenges and applying your technical expertise to some of Michigan's largest and most impactful transportation projects? Do you enjoy collaborating with design and construction teams to develop innovative engineering solutions that support safe, reliable infrastructure? As the region senior geotechnical engineer, you'll serve as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Metro Region's technical authority for soils engineering, pavement engineering and providing expert guidance on complex transportation projects throughout the Metro Detroit area. You'll play a key role in delivering technically complex transportation projects where challenging site conditions, high-traffic corridors and major infrastructure investments require innovative geotechnical and pavement solutions. From evaluating subsurface conditions to influencing the design and constructability of highways, bridges, retaining walls, foundations, and other critical transportation infrastructure, your expertise will help shape projects that keep Michigan moving.

You'll thrive in this role if you enjoy tackling technically complex engineering challenges while balancing field investigations, engineering analysis, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Success comes from combining sound engineering judgment with strong analytical and communication skills to evaluate geotechnical conditions, develop practical design recommendations and resolve construction challenges. You'll work alongside designers, construction staff, consultants, contractors, and maintenance personnel to support major infrastructure projects, provide quality assurance for geotechnical recommendations and help deliver safe, resilient transportation solutions across the Metro region.

As the next transportation engineer licensed specialist, you will be responsible for:

• Serving as the region soils resource during scoping and design phases of project development.
• Investigating construction sites to evaluate adequacy of pavement and other designs and providing corrective recommendations where needed for area coverage.
• Functioning as a region level resource for complex geotechnical and pavement issues encountered during construction and mobilizing appropriate resources if needed to resolve problems.
• Providing region maintenance and region permits with geotechnical and pavement recommendations as requested for the area of coverage. Functioning as a region level resource for complex geotechnical and pavement issues related to maintenance or permits projects.
• Functioning as the M-10 retaining wall monitor program manager and coordinating with the MDOT Bureau of Bridges and Structures and Bridge Field Services in Lansing to inspect earth retaining structures in the Metro region.
• Function as region level resource to aid on regionwide construction projects.

Examples of duties

Education

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Experience

Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.
