Position Overview

This is a strong opportunity for a Transportation Design Project Manager who wants to lead meaningful roadway and municipal infrastructure projects while joining a stable, respected civil engineering and surveying firm with more than 107 years of service. R.H. Batterman & Co., Inc. is growing its Transportation Engineering Team and seeking a steady, thoughtful, relationship-driven Project Manager who brings technical skill, project ownership, and a people-first leadership style.

This role is ideal for a civil engineer with roadway design and project management experience who enjoys building client relationships, mentoring less-experienced engineers, and shaping infrastructure within local communities. You will manage transportation design projects from concept through completion while balancing scope, schedule, budget, quality, client communication, and team coordination. Local candidates are preferred, though we may consider relocation assistance for the right person.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple transportation and roadway design projects from concept through completion
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, team members, municipalities, agencies, and project partners
  • Communicate clearly and consistently across internal departments and external stakeholders
  • Delegate tasks effectively and provide guidance, mentorship, and support to engineering team members
  • Provide technical leadership and quality control throughout the design process
  • Lead project reviews and ensure compliance with applicable standards, specifications, and client expectations
  • Participate in the development of RFPs, RFQs, proposals, scopes, and project pursuit materials
  • Resolve project-related challenges with professionalism, practical judgment, and a solutions-oriented approach
  • Apply roadway design and civil engineering knowledge to produce safe, efficient, and cost-effective designs
  • Support PS&E development, project documentation, specifications, cost estimates, and design deliverables
  • Coordinate with municipal clients, Wisconsin DOT, consultants, field staff, and internal technical teams
  • Apply field experience and constructability awareness to design decisions
  • Continue developing technical knowledge in roadway, municipal, transportation, and civil engineering design
  • Help support the firm’s continued growth in Rock County, Walworth County, Wisconsin, and Northern Illinois

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering required
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Experience: 2+ years of design project management experience
  • Design Background: Strong background in design project engineering
  • Software: Proficiency with CAD/BIM software
  • Project Management: Ability to manage project scope, schedule, budget, communication, deliverables, and quality
  • Leadership: Ability to delegate work, support team members, and provide practical technical guidance
  • Communication: Strong written, verbal, client-facing, and team communication skills
  • Work Style: Reliable, organized, collaborative, curious, and solutions-oriented
  • Location: Local candidates strongly preferred; out-of-area candidates may be considered
  • Work Setting: Ability to work fully in person during onboarding and training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Roadway Experience: 2-5+ years of progressive roadway design experience
  • Wisconsin Experience: Experience with Wisconsin DOT and municipal roadway projects
  • PS&E: Familiarity with project contracts, specifications, estimates, and PS&E packages
  • QA/QC: Ability to perform quality reviews on design documents
  • Scoping: Experience scoping transportation, roadway, or municipal infrastructure projects
  • Field Awareness: Ability to apply field experience and constructability insight to design decisions
  • Municipal Projects: Experience supporting local streets, community infrastructure, public works, or municipal transportation improvements
  • Relocation: Willingness to relocate to the Rock County or Walworth County area if not already local
  • Hybrid Readiness: Ability to transition to a hybrid schedule after completing training on firm processes

Ideal Candidate Profile

This opportunity is best suited for a Transportation Design Project Manager who is steady, practical, and relationship-driven. The ideal candidate enjoys leading projects, supporting clients, mentoring engineers, and working in a collaborative environment where quality and long-term relationships matter.

The strongest fit will bring roadway design experience, project management ability, client communication skills, and a calm, organized approach to solving project challenges. This person should understand budgets and deadlines, but also understand people. Batterman is looking for someone who can grow with the firm, contribute to the transportation team, and support continued expansion in Rock and Walworth Counties.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary of $80,000-$130,000 annually, depending on experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance
  • Company-matched retirement plan
