Summary:
The Transportation and Support Specialist is responsible for safely operating passenger buses or vans to transport clients to and from medical, dental, psychiatric, and specialty appointments. This role ensures timely pick-up and drop-off, maintains vehicle cleanliness and safety, and accurately logs transportation activities. When appointments are not scheduled, the specialist supports the program by assisting with other driving needs, and administrative tasks.
Essential Functions:
- Safely operate a passenger bus or van on assigned routes, transporting clients to and from medical, dental, psychiatric, and specialty appointments.
-  Adhere to scheduled pick-up and drop-off times; follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays promptly.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections; report maintenance concerns and submit work orders as needed.
- Ensure vehicles remain clean, organized, sanitized, and fueled.
- Prepare and submit transportation logs, including passenger counts, mileage, ETA/ATA times, and any incidents or schedule deviations.
Additional Responsibilities When No Appointments Are Scheduled
To maximize support for programs and ensure efficient use of time, the role may include:
Program Support:
- Assist with transporting individuals between Glenwood campuses or programs for therapy, admissions, discharges, evaluations, or special activities.
- Provide support for urgent transport needs (e.g., hospital pick-ups, pharmacy runs, paperwork drop-offs).
- Assist with scanning, filing, and other administrative tasks as needed
- Help maintain appointment packets, verifying that required documentation is complete prior to scheduled appointments.
Operational & Facility Support:
- Perform light courier duties such as delivering mail, forms, supplies, and administrative materials to various departments.
- Participate in vehicle rotations for cleaning, fueling, detailing, and maintenance appointments.
Safety & Administrative Support:
- Report safety concerns or observations during deliveries or pick-ups.
- Assist with inventory checks of transportation supplies (first aid kits, safety equipment, PPE).
- Maintain current knowledge of routes, facility locations, appointment procedures, and program logistics.
- Provide support during emergencies, special events, or organization-wide activities requiring transportation coordination.

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating a 12-passenger van or bus
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License with an excellent driving record, insurable under the agency’s insurance provider
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to successfully pass all required background screenings (drug screen, AFI/FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse/Neglect Registry, physical agility, etc.)
- Ability to read maps and follow written and verbal directions.
- Ability to read, write, and follow instructions accurately.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact respectfully and professionally with individuals, families, and staff.
- Demonstrated reliability, patience, and sound judgment when working with adults and children with varying behavioral and developmental needs.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
- Must be able to apply MCS techniques safely.
