Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping sustainable development across Suffolk, responding to planning consultations on behalf of the Local Highway Authority and working closely with a wide range of internal colleagues, developers, and local planning authorities to agree high-quality design principles. You’ll use your expertise in highways and planning to influence proposals, negotiating solutions that both enable growth and secure vital infrastructure improvements to mitigate the impacts of development. Alongside assessing applications, you’ll contribute to creating more accessible, inclusive communities by helping to enhance transport networks for all users. You’ll also play an important part in supporting the development of town-wide transport plans, collaborating with colleagues to identify and promote practical, forward-thinking schemes that improve connectivity and support Suffolk’s long-term ambitions

You will need

  • passion for promoting high standards of sustainable transport in new developments by influencing a wide audience as to the benefits for the people of Suffolk
  • a good level understanding of all aspects of highway design and construction and relevant sections of the Highway Act
  • to be capable of representing the team at meetings with internal and external organisations (as appropriate) to provide expert advice in area of work, sometimes in challenging circumstances.

You can view a full list of requirements in the Job and Person Profile (JPP), which you can find in the ‘How to apply’ section towards the bottom of this advert. If you believe you can succeed in this role, apply. Even if you don't meet all requirements, still apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

The team

The Transport Planning Team sits at the heart of the Transport Strategy function, playing a vital role in supporting and shaping Suffolk’s future growth. Working collaboratively, the team ensures that new developments are not only ambitious but also sustainable in highway terms, contributing positively to the county’s long-term transport network. Their work spans development management, where they provide expert input to local planning authorities on the suitability of new developments, as well as securing funding and delivering key transport infrastructure and initiatives, particularly those that promote active travel. As part of this dynamic and supportive team, you will help influence how Suffolk grows, ensuring that new communities are well-connected, safe, and designed with the future in mind.
