The Transport Authorization Specialist is responsible for coordinating medical transportation and helps facilitate patient transfers within and outside of Valley Health. Responsibilities include, but not limited to obtaining pre-authorization from transportation brokers for ambulance, wheelchair and ambulatory transports; access and maintain awareness of the broker manifests and communicate changes and assignments with all transportation providers; schedule and assist with scheduling future transports with Valley Medical Transport; follow-up with referrals to ensure completion of the transport; facilitate all aspects of the transport to include relaying specific information such as pick-up and drop-off location and bed allocation/placement.
The Transport Authorization Specialist is expected to develop strong professional relationships with each transportation broker to streamline the transportation process for beneficiaries and the referrals; this includes providing area and service familiarization to the routers of the transportation broker. Identifying and contacting the correct transportation broker, based on the insurance plan administering the benefit, is key to providing a high reliability service to the patient and referrals. Must have knowledge of payment responsibility by service request. A close working relationship with Valley Medical Transport, transfer nurses and operators within the Valley Health Patient Logistics Center is required.
Other potential duties include phone triaging of calls into the PLC, collection of faxes related to patient information, working with all teams in a collaborative effort to assist in the improvement of system wide capacity management. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
Education
High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience
5 Years experience in health care environment preferred.
3 Years supervisory experience preferred.
Certification & Licensures
Valid and clean driver's license required.
Qualifications
Ability to submit to periodic drug screenings required.
Professional appearance and pleasant personality required.
Ability to communicate verbally required.
Ability to maintain written and electronic records required.
Ability to utilize computer-based scheduling software required.
Ability to communicate clearly with all stakeholders in patient transportation logistics.
Ability to maintain a customer service-oriented approach to tasks.
Must be familiar with ambulance, wheelchair van and ambulatory transportation vehicle capabilities.
Awareness of geographical issues relating to time and distance between facilities.
