If so, consider the City of Harrisonburg Public Transportation Department's Transit Supervisor (Day Shift) position!

The Transit Supervisor is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $26.67 - $29.34 per hour (equivalent to $55,473 - $61,027 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City Policy Section 3: Compensation.

As the Transit Supervisor on the day shift, you'll perform a variety of technical duties, including but not limited to supervising bus operators, providing assistance in the operation of the Transit division, planning and scheduling transportation services, assisting the Transit Superintendent, and operating a transit and paratransit bus as needed. You're the ideal candidate for this position if you possess leadership skills and understand the importance of promoting teamwork and safety in all aspects of transit operations.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED and moderate (1-3 years) experience operating buses and in customer service. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
• Valid driver's license is required at the time of application. Possession of or the ability to acquire an appropriate CDL valid in the Commonwealth of VA is required by the end of the paid, on-the-job classroom training for this position, or as deemed appropriate by the Department.
• Availability to work Mondays - Fridays from 6:00am - 3:00pm with additional days/hours as required by business needs.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Thorough knowledge of:
• The safe operation of transit and paratransit buses;
• The geography of the service area;
• Area traffic laws;
• Paratransit operations and dispatch.
• General knowledge of:
• Modern personnel practices and related legislation;
• Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration requirements for transit and paratransit bus operation;
• And the ability to communicate concerning mechanics of bus;
• Ability to:
• Plan and schedule the work of rotating staff;
• Supervise transit operators;
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports;
• Operate transit vehicles safely and efficiently and to train less experienced operators regarding same;
• Remain alert and to maintain calm demeanor during stressful periods;
• Express ideas clearly and accurately both orally and in writing;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Physical Requirements: This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

• Federal Transit Administration physical; and
• Criminal background check.

This position is subject to alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
