Our employer partner is a Transportation and Public Transit company and currently looking to add an experienced Transit Operator to their team!
Job Overview:
The Transit Operator is responsible for safely operating assigned public transit vehicles, including buses, streetcars, subways, light rail vehicles, or Wheel-Trans buses. The role involves providing reliable transportation, assisting passengers with accessibility needs, communicating service information, and ensuring compliance with traffic laws, safety procedures, and transit regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate assigned transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, operating procedures, and safety requirements.
- Monitor road, traffic, weather, vehicle, and passenger conditions to identify hazards and respond appropriately to emergencies or service disruptions.
- Provide passengers with accurate information about fares, routes, schedules, delays, diversions, and transit policies.
- Make clear announcements regarding service updates and connecting routes.
- Deliver courteous, professional, and respectful customer service to passengers, coworkers, and members of the public.
- Assist passengers with mobility and accessibility needs, including following procedures for boarding, securement, and pick-up and drop-off.
- Follow accessibility requirements, human rights legislation, and applicable transit regulations.
- Maintain concentration, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively to changing operational conditions.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 secondary school diploma or recognized equivalent.
- Valid, non-probationary Ontario Class G driver's licence in good standing.
- A satisfactory driving record that meets the employer’s requirements.
- Ability to meet the applicable licensing standards for a Class CZ licence for bus operations or a Class F licence for Wheel-Trans operations.
- Previous frontline, face-to-face customer service experience.
- Strong defensive driving skills, safety awareness, and sound decision-making abilities.
- Professional verbal communication skills and the ability to provide clear customer information.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions, follow verbal directions, and apply safety procedures.
- Knowledge of major roads, intersections, institutions, and surrounding areas within the Greater Toronto Area.
- Knowledge of accessibility requirements and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
- Ability to successfully complete all required recruitment assessments, medical examinations, drug testing, and vehicle-specific training.
- Availability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, including nights, split shifts, weekends, and holidays.
