The Department of Environmental Services is hiring a Transfer Station/Landfill Supervisor Iin Kailua, Oahu. This position supervises and/or coordinates all operations and maintenance activities at Kapaa Transfer Station and Sanitary Landfills. Ensure subordinates and self-adhere to applicable safety practices, rules, and procedures, and perform all duties in a safe and acceptable manner to ensure the safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.

What You Will Do:

  • Supervise daily shift operations by reviewing shift logs, conducting staff meetings, assigning and adjusting work, providing direction, and ensuring employees follow established policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Monitor personnel and operations at transfer stations, convenience centers, and landfill facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operations; respond to operational issues, vehicle breakdowns, accidents, and other unusual situations.
  • Coordinate waste disposal operations and routing, including rerouting collection vehicles and commercial haulers during facility shutdowns or other disruptions, and assisting with the selection of disposal routes and sites to maintain efficient service.
  • Communicate with employees, supervisors, contractors, officials, and the public by providing information, explaining policies and procedures, addressing complaints, and coordinating responses to operational concerns.
  • Prepare and review operational documentation, including shift reports, logs, time sheets, accident and safety reports, inspection reports, and recommendations for corrective action; train and instruct shift personnel as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the operation and maintenance of a refuse disposal transfer station, sanitary landfill site or incinerator plant involving the use of motorized equipment.

Applicable Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of basic supervision, refuse transfer station and landfill operations, refuse disposal rules, related equipment, and workplace safety.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of employees and coordinate daily operations.
  • Ability to identify and correct equipment and operational problems and improve work procedures when needed.
  • Ability to give clear instructions, keep accurate records, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to promote safe work practices, enforce safety rules, work well with others, and deal effectively with the public.


LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment
