Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Division of Clinical Epidemiology is seeking a

Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Education and Training Specialist for the HAI/AR Program. This position will provide oversight and subject matter expertise to coordinate statewide education and training initiatives on HAI, AR, antimicrobial stewardship (AS), and infection prevention and control (IPC). The HAI/AR Education and Training Specialist will use innovative teaching techniques to create impactful education and training to engage all members of the healthcare

and public health community regardless of their IPC expertise. This role is responsible for leading, planning, creating, delivering, promoting, and evaluating statewide educational initiatives tailored to the needs of Virginia’s healthcare and public health workforce. The HAI/AR Education and Training Specialist will assess learning needs regularly, provide rapid response to educational requests, develop accessible and tailored training for a variety of audiences, promote awareness of current HAI/AR/AS/IPC concerns and activities, and implement initiatives to grow infection prevention and control expertise within Virginia.

The Division of Clinical Epidemiology in the Office of Epidemiology at the Virginia Department of Health works with partners and applies epidemiologic principles to infectious diseases affecting the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia in healthcare settings and the community, with the mission of improving patient-level outcomes and protecting the population.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and training methods
  • Knowledge of needs assessments, organizational development, and program evaluation
  • Experience using information technology related to education/training (including distance learning and learning management systems)
  • Group facilitation experience including effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of teams including public health staff, healthcare and emergency management partners
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, communicate, and consult constructively
  • Strong problem-solving, customer relations, and leadership skills
  • Experience in developing instructional plans and supporting methods and materials
  • Ability to manage logistical, administrative, and contractual details associated with the program
  • Advanced expertise in healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, and infection prevention and control related principles and practices
  • Travel may be required

Additional Considerations

  • Substantial experience providing education/training programs in preferred healthcare, public health, nursing, laboratory, and/or infection prevention and control
  • Education in nursing, microbiology, public health, or related field
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia
  • Current infection control certification by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) or studying to take the exam
  • Certified health education specialist (CHES) by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing or studying to take the exam
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices in a variety of healthcare setting types
