About the Role

The ALS Hydrographics Team in Maffra, Victoria is seeking ambitious applicants for the position of Trainee Hydrographer / Technical Assistant within the environmental monitoring team.

The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training as well as enrolment and support to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography).

As a permanent position, this role is Monday to Thursday 8:00-4:30, Friday 8:00-2:30

The Day-to-Day
Responsibilities include:

  • Hands on role, requiring teamwork, reliability and initiative

  • Routine visitation and maintenance of remote environmental monitoring sites, consisting mainly of stream flow monitoring and meteorological monitoring sites

  • Collect and verify environmental data using various software packages and scientific instruments in the field (streamflow gauging, Water quality/sampling etc)

  • Assistance in completing other environmental monitoring projects and routine works as required

  • Accurate Record keeping including field notes, photographs, and maps

  • Assisting in the upgrade of old, and installation of new environmental monitoring stations across the Gippsland Region

  • Use of a wide range of hand tools; work can include manual excavation for extended periods of time

The Essentials:
The successful candidate will possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Environmental or trade-based qualification preferred, but not essential, school leavers are welcome to apply

  • Australian driving licences

  • Strong work ethic, who is reliable and shows initiative

  • Physically fit with a desire for working in a hands-on, outdoor environment

  • Ability to work away for 3 nights monthly

  • Experience in the use of hand, power and pneumatic tools is highly desirable

  • Electronics and mechanical aptitude an advantage

  • Lateral thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Sound knowledge of, and adherence to general HSE principles and practices

  • Ability to swim

  • Ability to perform manual handling tasks

  • Good computer skills/aptitude
