Accountabilities

As part of a project team, the role will be to accelerate the learning of fixed cost estimation for chemical manufacturing routes. This cost analysis will be integrated into the engineering project execution system from the earliest stages. The intern will gain diverse experience in chemical manufacturing, data analysis and project management.

Knowledge Framework & Literature Review

  • Provide a refined high-resolution breakdown of fixed cost components according to Manufacturing, Engineering standards
  • Compare current practice to industry wide estimation practices
  • Analyze how fixed cost can be integrated in the Technology Selection during Conceptual design and process review, the intersection between Process & Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing

Data Sourcing & Structuring

  • Identify and consolidate relevant internal and external data sources for capital and fixed cost estimation
  • Support the organization of cost data into a reusable accessible format (Excel) for cross-functional use
  • Assist in validating existing rules of thumb (e.g. batch volume thresholds, brownfield vs greenfield) against real project data

Proof of Concept (POC) & Tool Selection

  • Perform a comparative analysis: Internal Methodology vs. Commercial Software to determine the best fit for all capital project stages.
  • Support proof-of-concept work for a cost estimation tool, making use of Syngenta's internal data and digital infrastructure

Business Process Integration

  • Map the integration of fixed cost estimation into the Engineering Project Execution workflow and Process Technology standard operating procedures.
  • Develop process comparisons (manufacturing routes, not molecules) to support technical-to-business decision-making.

Qualifications

Required

  • Education: Master's level (or final year Bachelor's) in chemical engineering, process engineering, or industrial engineering
  • Languages: French (C1) / English (B2)
  • Technical skills:
    • Understanding of manufacturing and chemical processes – brownfield / greenfield, manufacturing routes, equipment types and characteristics
    • Data analysis basics – ability to work with data and structure information, formulate hypotheses and draw conclusions
    • Project management basics – cross-functional communication, stakeholder mapping, tasks definition and tracking, reporting, moving forward with incomplete information

Preferable attributes you may need

  • Knowledge of cost estimation methodologies
  • Prior internship or academic project in an industrial environment
