The Heavy Duty Technician / Trailer Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks and trailers. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to perform both mechanical and cosmetic repairs while ensuring all work meets dealership, manufacturer, and safety standards. The technician will utilize OEM diagnostic systems, perform preventive maintenance, complete pre-delivery inspections, and communicate repair findings clearly with internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues in heavy-duty trucks and trailers (Class 6–8).
  • Trailer body work, reskinning trailers
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on diesel engines, transmissions, air and hydraulic brake systems, suspensions, clutches, and electrical systems.
  • Utilize OEM diagnostic software and laptop-based tools for accurate fault-code troubleshooting and system analysis.
  • Road test vehicles as required to verify proper repair and performance.
  • Perform cosmetic repairs on heavy-duty commercial trucks and trailers.
  • Remove, repair, and replace damaged components using hand and power tools.
  • Work with metals, plastics, glass, and mechanical components.
  • Ensure vehicles are returned to customers in excellent condition with a focus on quality workmanship and cleanliness.
  • Conduct truck delivery check-ins and inspections.
  • Perform thorough Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDI) to determine required repairs.
  • Maintain detailed repair orders and documentation in accordance with dealership and manufacturer standards.
  • Clearly communicate diagnostic findings, recommended repairs, and service updates to Service Advisors and Parts personnel.
  • Adhere to all OSHA regulations, hazardous waste disposal procedures, and manufacturer safety guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Properly maintain and store tools and equipment.
  • Participate in OEM-directed training programs to stay current on new technologies, repair techniques, and warranty guidelines.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and professionalism in a fast-paced service environment.
  • Work collaboratively with other technicians and team members to complete repairs efficiently.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude; experience with diesel engines and heavy-duty truck repairs preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot diagnostic fault codes using OEM software.
  • Familiarity with dealer management systems and manufacturer diagnostic platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair orders, technical manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform frequent standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and extended periods of physical activity.
  • Forklift experience preferred but not required.
  • Sound decision-making skills and ability to remain professional under pressure.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of mechanical experience or completion of an accredited diesel or heavy equipment program preferred.
  • Automotive or heavy equipment experience is a plus.
  • Basic personal tool set required (specialty tools provided).
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.
  • CDL preferred but not required; willingness to obtain a CDL is a plus.
