Job Overview
The Trailer Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining commercial trailers and trailer components in accordance with company, manufacturer, and safety standards. This position performs preventative maintenance, mechanical repairs, brake and suspension work, welding/fabrication, electrical troubleshooting, and other trailer-related repairs while ensuring quality workmanship and safe operating conditions.
Technicians are expected to complete repairs accurately, efficiently, and safely while maintaining proper documentation and communication with leadership and team members
Core Functions
- Diagnose and Repair: Perform inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on trailers, including brakes, electrical systems, suspension, and structural components.
- Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and servicing, ensuring trailers are compliant with safety regulations and industry standards.
- Customer Service: Communicate effectively with customers to explain repairs, answer questions, and provide recommendations.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of services performed, parts used, and repairs completed.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other technicians and staff to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality service.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and repair techniques.
Competencies and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in automotive or diesel technology is a plus.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., ASE, OEM certifications) are preferred but not mandatory.
- Knowledge of trailer systems and repair procedures
- Ability to safely perform brake, suspension, hub, wheel end, and structural repairs
- Ability to read and follow repair procedures and work instructions
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to identify safety concerns and correct deficiencies
- Basic mechanical and troubleshooting abilities
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision based on technician tier level
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to adapt in a fast-paced service environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, squat, crawl, climb, and lift throughout the workday
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and shop environments
- Ability to safely use shop equipment, tools, and machinery
- Ability to wear required PPE
