TxDOT is seeking a motivated Traffic Systems Technician I or II to join our Traffic Systems Maintenance Office located at 6810 Old Katy Road in Houston, Texas. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start and build a long-term career in traffic operations while serving the traveling public.

In this role, you will work as part of a hands-on team responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting traffic signals, roadway illumination, and related traffic systems throughout the Houston District. These systems play a critical role in keeping roadways safe and operating efficiently for the millions of people who travel them every day.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, and learning technical skills. No prior experience is required for entry-level candidates. TxDOT will provide training on equipment, systems, procedures, and safety practices, giving you the tools and knowledge needed to succeed and grow within the organization.

Traffic Systems Technician I:

Performs entry-level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication,illuminationanddatacollectiondevices/systems. Workmaybeperformedinheavytrafficandmayrequire extensivestatewidetravel.Workmayrequirecontactwithgovernmentalandprivateentities. Employeesatthislevelperform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Traffic Systems Technician II:

Performsroutineworkactivitiesrelatedtotheinstallation,repair,troubleshootingandmaintenanceandprogramming of trafficsystems,communication,illuminationanddatacollectiondevices/systems.Workmaybeperformedinheavytrafficand may require extensive statewide travel.Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

Traffic Systems Technician I:

• Assistsininspectingconstructionmethods,workmanshipandmaintenanceprocedurestoensurecontractorsbuild,install

• Assistsinrespondingtocomplaintsandidentifyingproblemsregardingtrafficsignaltiming/trafficcongestionand assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.

• Assistsinworkingwithothergovernmentalandprivateentitiesconcerningutilitiesandrights-of-way.

• Learnstoidentify,troubleshoot,problemsolveandidentifypossiblenewsite characteristics.

• Respondstoemergencysituationstoassistwithrepairandmaintenanceoftrafficsignals,systems,lightingortraffic data collection equipment.

• Performs other jobresponsibilities as assigned.

Traffic Systems Technician II:

Includes all essential duties listed for Traffic Systems Tech I as well as:

• AttendsmeetingswithAreaEngineersandcontractorstoresolveproblemsandimplementsolutions.

• Identifies,troubleshootsandproblemsolvespossiblenewsitecharacteristics.

• Inspectsconstructionmethods,workmanshipandmaintenanceprocedurestoensurecontractorsbuild,install,maintainand repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.

• Followsapplicablesafetyprocedureswhenworkinginanareawhereotherutilitiessuchashighvoltagelines,gaslines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.

• Performs other jobresponsibilities as assigned

• High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Education:

• High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:
