TxDOT’s Waco District is looking to hire a Traffic Systems Specialist I. This position involves performing specialized electrical-electronic technical work “related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems.” We will provide training and are looking for someone who is eager to learn and has a positive attitude.

This position is for a Traffic Systems Specialist I- depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Analyzes and interprets schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
  • Monitors work sites under varying conditions of light and weather and ensures that traffic control measures are operating effectively.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

2 years experience in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License with "N" endorsement, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

  • Construction equipment operations
  • The relationship of traffic control equipment to the operation of a traffic management system
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Electrical construction procedures
  • Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
  • Construction equipment operations
  • The relationship of traffic control equipment to the operation of a traffic management system
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Electrical construction procedures
  • Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques
