Location

This position is eligible for a hybrid work model. When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of the Traffic Operations Centre, 1340 Brant Street, Burlington. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective September 2027, this role will be required to be on site 50% of the time each month.

This position is responsible for the operation of traffic signals and systems, including the development of signal timing and coordination plans to optimize traffic flow, maintaining accurate records and databases, and the analysis of data to enhance signal system operation.

Responsibilities

In this position, you will:

  • Develop, monitor and evaluate traffic signal timing plans and control strategies to ensure correlation with prevailing traffic patterns.
  • Troubleshoot and identify system issues and malfunctions, liaising with maintenance crews when necessary.
  • Ensure all work is completed within applicable legal, engineering standards and policy requirements.
  • Monitor and assess road network performance through a combination of field observations and studies, and through various signal system and ITS reporting tools.
  • Configure, program and utilize software and various ITS devices such as traffic cameras, traffic data collection devices and communications equipment.
  • Prepare traffic signal construction drawings for new traffic signals and for signal rebuilds or modifications in conjunction with road construction projects.
  • Assist in the review of traffic impact studies.
  • Investigate and respond to inquiries from Council and the public.
  • Organize and complete various field studies.

Requirements

You have a post-secondary degree/diploma in Transportation Engineering Technology or a related field and at least 4 years of related work experience. You are also proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD as well as computer-based traffic control systems and signal timing and analysis programs such as Synchro and Vistro. You demonstrate a strong knowledge of traffic signal operations and theory, as well as excellent communication, analytical and time-management skills.

A valid Class G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract with no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire, and/or no administrative driver license (ADLS) suspensions.
