Please note It is anticipated that this position will transition to the new Alberta Sheriffs Police Service at a future date.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to a Staff Sergeant, the Sergeant, Traffic, provides frontline supervisory leadership for traffic enforcement operations at the shift or unit level. This is a frontline supervisory position with direct oversight of approximately 4 to 12 Constables (shift-dependent), providing clear operational direction during shift operations. This role ensures the effective execution of traffic enforcement priorities, operational compliance, officer safety, and consistent delivery of roadway safety outcomes. The Sergeant translates direction into operational action, supervises enforcement activities, and maintains situational awareness of roadway conditions and emerging risks. The position carries significant accountability, as decisions related to supervision of police operations and the exercise of police powers may be subject to judicial review, Charter challenge, and professional standards of oversight. Through sound judgment and effective coordination, the role contributes directly to reducing high-risk driving behaviors and improving public safety outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide frontline supervision, direction, and support to constables.
  • Coordinate and deploy resources to address traffic risks, collisions, and operational priorities.
  • Oversee compliance with legislation, policy, and professional standards, including report review and corrective action.
  • Lead and coordinate response to traffic incidents, including collisions and high-risk enforcement activities.
  • Execute and monitor enforcement priorities, ensuring activities focus on roadway safety outcomes.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage performance, including feedback, development, and conduct management.
  • Manage shift operations, including briefings, scheduling, reporting, and escalation of critical issues.
  • Exercise independent operational judgment and ensure personnel maintain required certifications and readiness.

Qualifications

A university degree in Criminology, Police Studies, Criminal Justice, Adult Education or other behavioral sciences (Psychology, Sociology, etc.) relevant to law enforcement, plus seven (7) years of operational policing experience, including traffic enforcement, fatal collision investigation and supervision.

Equivalency Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • one year of experience for one year of education.


Candidates must be eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in the Province of Alberta in accordance with the Police Act (Alberta).

Preference will be given to candidates with ten (10) or more years of operational policing experience, consistent with industry standards.

Requirement:

  • Demonstrate experience providing frontline supervision, including shift management, operational briefings, incident leadership, and real-time decision-making in dynamic environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable legislation (Criminal Code of Canada, Police Act (Alberta), Charter, Traffic Safety Act (Alberta)) and ability to apply policing authorities, ensure compliance, and uphold professional standards.
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and manage performance, including addressing conduct concerns through progressive discipline and clear, defensible documentation.
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment under pressure, including coordinating operations, managing critical incidents, and maintaining officer and public safety.
  • Experience reviewing investigative files and operational documentation, ensuring evidentiary integrity, disclosure readiness, and compliance with reporting standards. This includes demonstrated experience in fatal collision investigations.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting motorcycle motorcade escorts.
  • Demonstrate experience in conducting interviews with the media and attending community meetings.


Asset

  • Experience coordinating joint operations and collaborating with internal units and external agencies during complex or multi-agency incidents.
  • Demonstrate expertise in use-of-force principles, de-escalation, tactical communication, and officer safety practices.
