Position Information

TxDOT's Houston District is seeking a detail-oriented person interested in traffic and incident management. This role is critical to ensure the safety of citizens traveling through the greater Houston area. The ideal candidate will have a background in data entry, dispatch and/or traffic management. This position requires some flexibility in desired work schedule. Customer service experience is an asset in this customer facing role. Communicating with multiple entities and keeping the Traffic Management Center following TxDOT's mission is key.

Monitors traffic via computerized surveillance and control equipment located within an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) managed area. Disseminates information to the public through various forms of communication. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

  • Advises the general public of traffic conditions through the use of computerized variable message signs, highway advisory radio and/or low frequency television broadcasts.
  • Assists in developing routine incident response scenarios.
  • Assists in performing real time traffic studies to determine traffic routing.
  • Disseminates traffic information through various communication devices to other governmental agencies located within the operations center and/or managed area.
  • Monitors traffic flow and conditions through the use of loop detector systems, closed circuit television systems and/or automated vehicle identification systems.
  • Updates traffic management data base.
  • Uses two-way radios to interact with other transportation and law enforcement agencies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in Traffic studies, analysis, computer ops, electronics, traffic management, telecommunication ops. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Customer Service Experience - Preferably in telecommunications
  • Basic Computer Skills Required

Competencies:

  • Some knowledge of:
    • Freeway management system concepts and operations
    • Traffic flow principles and procedures
    • Applicable ITS related computer applications and operations
    • Emergency response procedures
  • Some skill in:
    • Collecting, sorting and compiling data
    • Analyzing and organizing business and technical data
    • Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management
    • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
    • Using applicable electronic test equipment
    • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Standing - prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

  • This role is essential to operations and may operate in non-typical hours.
