The Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all temporary traffic control operations for construction and maintenance projects. The TCS ensures traffic control activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with approved Traffic Control Plans (TCPs), standards, client requirements, and company safety policies. This position provides leadership and direction to flaggers and traffic control personnel while serving as the primary point of contact for traffic control activities in the field. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and organizational skills while supporting projects throughout Alaska.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise traffic control crews, flaggers, and pilot vehicle operators on assigned projects.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, inspect, and oversee temporary traffic control operations in accordance with approved Traffic Control Plan requirements.
  • Review project plans, specifications, permits, lane closure requirements, and traffic control layouts prior to mobilization.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, and tailgate meetings with traffic control personnel.
  • Schedule, assign, and direct traffic control personnel to support project operations and changing field conditions.
  • Ensure all traffic control devices, signs, barricades, cones, drums, delineators, message boards, and related equipment are properly installed, maintained, and removed.
  • Inspect work zones regularly and make field adjustments to maintain compliance, safety, and traffic flow.
  • Coordinate traffic control operations with project managers, superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, owners, agencies, and law enforcement personnel when required.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and implement adjustments to minimize congestion and maintain public safety.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate flaggers and traffic control personnel regarding procedures, safety requirements, and company expectations.
  • Verify employee certifications and maintain required traffic control documentation and records.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, complaints, and traffic control concerns and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Conduct inspections of traffic control equipment and arrange repairs or replacement as necessary.
  • Maintain inventory of traffic control materials and equipment.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company, client, state, federal, OSHA, DOT, and project-specific requirements.
  • Assist with traffic control setup, flagging operations, and field work as necessary.
  • Complete daily reports, inspection forms, safety records, timesheets, and other required documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • To qualify as a Traffic Control Supervisor in Alaska, you must hold an ATSSA TCS or IMSA TCS/TCT certification, have 4,000 hours of experience in temporary traffic control, and be able to demonstrate relevant employment history. These qualifications ensure you can safely and legally supervise work zone operations in compliance with state regulations.
  • Current ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Certification, or ability to obtain certification prior to assignment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of traffic control, roadway construction, utility construction, or related field experience.
  • Previous experience directing work crews or serving in a lead role.
  • Ability to read and interpret Traffic Control Plans, project specifications, and requirements.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in changing field conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.
