Indian River County

Works under the direct supervision of the Animal Services Manager. Performs a variety of working level, semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, construction, installation, and repair of Animal Services Facility and Grounds.

Examples of duties

  • Perform general landscape duties such as mowing, trimming, grooming, planting trees, and other plants in new and/or existing landscaped areas.
  • Maintaining grounds by pruning and removing debris from sidewalks, parking lots, planters, and other grounds features.
  • Operate small and light equipment to include but not limited to various types of mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, pruning equipment and various hand tools.
  • Works with hand tools and power tools to perform various maintenance duties.
  • Uses computer program and adjusts HVAC controls to maintain proper temperatures.
  • Repairs and maintains HVAC systems.
  • Ability to operate trucks, tractors and other maintenance equipment.
  • Assist in the preparation and clean-up of special events and natural disasters.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment; transport equipment to be serviced; assist with repairs as needed.
  • Assist with janitorial duties including, but not limited to cleaning restrooms, removing garbage, litter, and debris.
  • Cleans windows and floors with equipment such as squeegees and floor scrubbing machines.
  • Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. (painting, repairing drywall, pressure washes, etc.)
  • Orders supplies and materials as needed for repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays as needed due to workload.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by (3) three years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and related work experience.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Prefer license for a skilled trade but not needed to qualify for position.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of general landscape and lawn maintenance procedures.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance of facility and the maintenance and repair of related equipment.

Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures for tree trimming and those to be followed in generating power driven tools and equipment.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, County officials and the public.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to heat, humidity, rain, noise, dust, and other environmental conditions. The position requires adherence to safety procedures and the use of protective equipment. Duties are physically demanding and may include walking, bending, and occasionally lifting or carrying objects up to 100 pounds.
