Job Description


Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

This temporary position helps maintain the college’s landscaped grounds through mowing, weed eating, and general grounds maintenance services that preserve the beauty, safety, and functionality of the campus, ensuring an inviting environment that supports the college’s educational mission and leaves a positive impression on students, employees, and visitors.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
KSAs and Competencies required to successfully perform the job:
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn about power equipment including lawn mowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of and experience in or the ability to learn about the proper methods of caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
  • Ability to manage time across all duties assigned for the day.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work efficiently and thoroughly.
  • Ability to use hand tools required for landscaping.

Required Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of groundskeeping and landscaping practices and procedures.
  • Ability and desire to learn groundskeeping and landscaping practices and procedures.


Additional Considerations
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in a similar position.
