ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

All employees share components of leadership, management, technical, and team skills to assist in making the City of Largo the community of choice in Tampa Bay.

Technical

  • Assists Trades Technician II in assigned maintenance operations
  • Measures and cuts wire, carries tools and wire
  • Paints signs, facilities, etc.
  • Performs concrete work and masonry
  • May operate various construction equipment
  • Drives a container truck and pickup truck
  • Repairs and paints containers
  • Helps plan, order materials, and calculate job needs
  • Performs related duties as required

SOLID WASTE

  • Operates commercial container trucks to deliver and remove commercial dumpsters
  • Operates forklifts
  • Repairs City dumpsters, garbage containers, and compactors, which may require the use of a cutting torch and welder, electrical and hydraulic repairs, etc.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on City-owned compactors
  • Assists in
    • the maintenance of City-owned compactors
    • maintaining Solid Waste facilities
  • Completes work orders as needed
  • Assists with general Solid Waste Division operations as needed (i.e., mini-route collection, etc.)

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and one (1) to three (3) years experience as a helper in a skilled trade; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Public Works Facilities only: Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "B" preferred
  • Public Works Solid Waste only: Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class “B” required
  • Valid Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with common practices, processes, materials, and tools in numerous skilled trades, mechanical aptitude

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 5% inside a climate-controlled building; 95% outside, including driving.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately two (2) hours per day, standing approximately three (3) hours per day, and walking approximately three (3) hours per day. The job also requires frequent: bending/stooping, grasping, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 15 pounds, with occasional: climbing, fine manipulations, pushing and routinely lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 45 pounds; the ability to work with arms extended overhead or below feet for extended periods; the ability to manipulate small objects with hands and fingers. Possess dexterity and agility to operate, and maneuver in and around equipment, piping, or other tight spaces. Physical requirements are often performed in confined areas, standing on ladders or other lifting devices, or in excavated, uneven areas. On rare occasions, the work requires: crawling, pulling, and lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 45 pounds.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to detect proper equipment operation and understand what others are saying in normal conversation and over the noise caused by construction equipment in person or on the telephone. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others and speak effectively on the phone. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, operate a vehicle, and read normal and/or fine print. The ability to perform work using tactile sensory skills, without visual observation, of some facet of work.

Driving Requirements: Requires a valid Florida Driver's License. CDL Class "B" for Solid Waste Collection.

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate various electronic devices, including telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, and calculators, as well as all associated software.

Other Machines: The work requires the ability to operate the following machines: ground penetrating radar, forklift, pressure washer, GPS, and electronic line and cable locators.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with various hand tools, including shovels, rakes, probe rods, brooms, manhole hooks, extension rakes, extension nets, sump pumps, wrenches, screwdrivers, metal snips, nut drivers, sledge hammers, and welders.
