Job Description

Overview

This is skilled work at the journeyman level of considerable variety involving concrete finishing, bricklaying, tile setting, rough carpentry, plastering, stuccoing, stone cutting and setting tasks in the repair, maintenance, installation, and construction of municipal buildings, facilities and services.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, replace and maintain City sidewalks, curbs, gutters and residential driveways.
  • Excavate existing concrete and other materials such as landscaping to prepare subbase to the established elevation and compact requirements.
  • Remove, replace, and/or rehabilitate concrete, paving stones, tiles and other masonry related materials, where required.
  • Conduct site preparation and clean up.
  • Form, finish and install using materials such as paving stones, concrete and tile mediums.
  • Construct wooden or steel forms in support of concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk, residential driveway and other placing/finishing projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in concrete construction and finishing, rough carpentry, stucco, tile setting, masonry, form setting, brick and block laying and plastering operations.
  • Knowledge of the standards, specifications and requirements applicable to the work performed.
  • Knowledge and ability in the planning, coordination and delivery of trades related projects.
  • Knowledge of concrete additives, sealers and characteristics of different mixes in all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions related to the work performed.
  • Skill in the operation and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the line of work.
  • Ability to perform all assigned work in accordance with prescribed specifications and standards.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written assignment, instructions and work from blueprints, detailed design drawings, diagrams, and sketches.
  • Ability to perform independently with minimal supervision and with considerable independence in judgement, action and initiative on all aspects of the job is required.
  • Ability to supervise one or more unskilled or semi-skilled subordinates, as required.
  • Ability to provide leadership to others and if required, provide input into performance reviews.
  • Ability to perform diverse skilled tasks with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff, contractors and members of the public.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented by a completed trades apprenticeship and 5 years of related journeyman experience, including apprenticeship training with considerable experience in the areas of concrete, masonry and rough carpentry
  • OR an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Licences, certificates and registrations:

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
  • Red Seal Endorsement in the Concrete Finisher (Cement Mason) Trade.

Working Conditions:

Job is physical in nature, requiring routine light and heavy physical effort and manual dexterity. Extended periods of concentration and visual effort is required. Exposure to noxious fumes, dust, exhaust, traffic and other disagreeable conditions.
