Department: Fac. Maint.

Pay: $26.45 per hour
$55,016.00 annually

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Juvenile Detention)

The Trade Specialist III works at a journeyman or Master Level with a variety of mechanical systems and associated electronic controls on county properties. This position performs installation, maintenance, diagnostic troubleshooting, and repairs. This position works with refrigeration equipment, air-conditioning equipment, steam and hot water boiler systems, warm-air furnaces, combination roof-top equipment, cooling towers, pump motors, plumbing and electrical fixtures, supply/drain lines, high/low voltage systems, and other such equipment operated in a County facility. In addition to hands-on work with equipment, this position also utilizes a computer-based Facility Management Software (FMS) to monitor, diagnose, and adjust systems as needed. This position is a manual, physically demanding work done both indoors and in extreme temperatures of the outdoors as required.

HVAC

  • Independently troubleshoot and repair HVAC/mechanical/control malfunctions
  • Keep accurate records of refrigerant usage and loss
  • Design and layout primary wiring service for motors and equipment
  • Fabricate and install sheet metal ductwork
  • Diagnose, evaluate present condition and repair high and low pressure duct systems
  • Make needed modifications to gas supply lines as needed

Electrical

  • Install and repair a variety of electrical fixtures, devices and equipment
  • Test and repair special circuits such as GFCI, control circuits, switch legs, and other electrical circuits
  • Troubleshoot and repair breakers, terminals, relays, contactors, and related equipment
  • Identify electrical problems with a variety of testing devices
  • Perform preventative maintenance on assorted electrical, security, and mechanical equipment
  • Install conduit and electrical boxes, and install and connect wiring
  • Service and repair cameras and security monitors

Plumbing

  • Install a variety of plumbing fixtures, devices, and equipment
  • Repair existing plumbing and gas systems and devices
  • Replace, clean, and repair flush valves, radiator valves, steam traps, faucets, water-temperature regulators and other devices
  • Troubleshoot and maintain and repair supply & stagnate sanitary systems, sewer ejector pumps, sewer pits, floats and related equipment
  • Cut, thread, solder, silver-solder, braze, weld, and hang pipe
  • Perform preventative maintenance on assorted plumbing equipment and mechanical equipment

General Building Maintenance

  • Perform carpentry work in repairing buildings and furniture
  • Repair flooring, wallboard, ceilings and ceiling tiles, roofs, exterior walls, and concrete
  • Move office furniture
  • Possess the ability to safely and properly operate power equipment such as saws, grinders, drills, sand blasters, welders, fork lifts, and a variety of other equipment
  • Paint rooms, hallways, and ceilings; patches holes; primes area for painting
  • Drives trucks and operates equipment in the loading of trucks
  • Remove snow and ice using hand shovel or snow equipment, possibly starting early in the morning depending on timing of storm
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Four years’ experience in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Journeyman Mechanical License. Refrigerant recovery certification, type I and type II. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid driver’s license without any current restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications: Five years’ in HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Associate’s degree or vocational (trade) school graduate in related field. Master Mechanical. Universal refrigerant recovery certification. City of Wichita Backflow Certification.
