GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Technical Service Manager, the Linux Administrator performs advance (senior level) systems administration work. Responsible for rigorously developing solution architectures, seeking practical solutions that optimize and re-use capabilities. Responsible for designing and building solutions that best meet business needs and that are aligned with the IT strategy and roadmaps. The Linux Administrator is an excellent technologist and has a passion for understanding and learning. Responsible for bringing good hands-on skills in key technologies and possessing the ability to rapidly assess new technologies. Will play an integral role in building the team’s skillset while demonstrating leadership values through delegation, motivation, and trust. Provides end-user assistance, issue resolution and reinstallation services in support of computers, applications, peripherals, and devices. Performs security and accessibility audits, maintains the current working system and recommends changes. Installs, configures, and maintains Linux-based systems. Server administration & Patching including operating systems and networks. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Completion of sixty semester hours from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

Five years full-time experience in Unix or Linux systems administration.

Two years of experience in Linux based servers related to system configuration like Tomcat & JBOSS, performance optimization, firewall management, investigating security incidents and disaster recovery planning; Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) upgrades and knowledge in python scripts for sysadmin tasks.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Licensure:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

One additional year of the required experience in Unix or Linux systems administration may substitute for thirty semester hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of sixty semester hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field.

Experience:

Two years of experience in Open-Source software installation, configuration and scripting languages.

Certification:

Red Hat Certified Specialist in Containers.

Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of core Linux & Unix Servers Refresh, Upgrades and Maintenance;

Knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, and ability to maintain other core services;

Knowledge of various tunable system resources;

Knowledge of Open-source software including content management systems and application middleware;

Knowledge of Linux security best practices and forensic techniques, e.g., tcpdump, wireshark, iptables and ipset;

Knowledge of Internet Technologies, Security technologies, Database Systems Administrations, Application Server Technologies or Network Management Systems;

Knowledge of network related equipment, practices and technologies;

Knowledge of Texas Administrative Code pertaining to security and accessibility;

Knowledge of RDBMS, e.g., Oracle, MySQL or Postgres, etc.;

Knowledge of managing RAID systems, including SAN/NAS appliances;

Knowledge of multi-node Linux environments or server farms;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Skill in coordinating solutions to problems; in scheduling, testing, installing, and implementing system software;

Skill in RedHat-based Linux distributions such as RHEL, CentOS or Fedora;

Skill in JBoss, Tomcat, WebSphere, WebLogic application server administration;

Skill in using enterprise servers (Proxy, DNS, Apache);

Skill in working with scripts in BASH, among others (Ruby, Python, Perl, PHP, TCL, etc.);

Skill in working with open-source content management systems such as Plone;

Skill in working with virtualization stack, e.g., VMware, CloudStack, Xen, KVM, etc.;

Ability to provide systems administration to include performance tuning, enhancements to system functionality and the ability to diagnose and independently resolve 3rd tier network related issues on following systems: RHEL, Apache/Tomcat and Jboss Server;

Ability to evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies;

Ability to build internal Wikis;

Ability to perform a custom installation of internally developed java and web-based applications;

Ability to work collaboratively with contract vendor to customize the Linux Operating system to provide added functionality for specialized Linux-based applications;

Ability to monitor hardware performance and modify settings on Linux servers using native commands;

Ability to remotely administer core technologies on Linux-based systems to provide after-hours support;

Ability to develop and use technical procedural documentation;

Ability to participate in the design and review of technical specifications for the procurement of network and server hardware and software;

Ability to write shell scripts and automate the process of scheduling jobs through cron;

Ability to work with vendors to replace hardware and software components;

Ability to manage technology projects;

Ability to lift and install Server, Storage, and Network Hardware;

Ability to database administrators and desktop and technical services teams to resolve issues on agency Systems;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to recognize, analyze, and resolve complex technical issues;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Multiple possible duty stations statewide.

Required to work overtime as necessary.

Required to adjust to changing schedules.

Required to respond to after-hour calls for assistance as necessary.

Required to participate in 24x7 support on-call rotation.

Required to pass a national fingerprint-based background check prior to employment offer.

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.
