Job Title: Toolmaker
Type: Contract-to-hire
We are seeking an experienced Toolmaker to support the repair and maintenance of existing injection molding tooling in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role is focused on troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining molds to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent production of high-quality parts.
The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and the ability to diagnose and resolve tooling issues while supporting production, maintenance, and quality objectives.
This position is primarily 1st shift, however shift flexibility is preferred. Overtime may be required based on production demand, machine downtime, and project workload.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Repair and maintain existing injection molding tooling and components
Diagnose and troubleshoot tooling issues to restore proper function
Use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to verify part and tool dimensions
Interpret tolerances for injection-molded components and tooling assemblies
Apply basic lifting and rigging techniques when handling molds and tooling equipment
Understand manufacturing processes and the impact of tooling condition on production performance
Create work orders for tooling repairs and preventive maintenance activities
Complete daily work sheets and maintain accurate documentation
Maintain and update die history and tooling maintenance records
Perform planned preventive maintenance (PM) on molds and tooling
Understand cost drivers including scrap, downtime, rework, and inefficiencies
Respond to urgent tooling and production issues in a timely manner
Attend production and maintenance meetings and communicate action items clearly
Submit repair-related requests through purchasing or maintenance systems
Collaborate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to meet output targets
Provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced toolmakers when needed
Qualifications
5–7 years of maintenance and repair experience in a manufacturing environment
Strong knowledge of injection molding tooling and component tolerances
Proficiency with precision measurement instruments
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, tooling drawings, and technical specifications
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
Experience working in a fast-paced production environment
Ability to work collaboratively with production, maintenance, and quality teams
MMBDC Certified Custom Injection Molding experience preferred
IATF 16949:2019 experience preferred
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, sit, and perform repetitive physical tasks
Frequent use of hands for tool operation and material handling
Ability to climb, bend, kneel, squat, crawl, and reach as needed
Ability to lift and move tooling components as required
Visual requirements include close vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
Work Environment
Manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery and moderate noise
Possible exposure to resin odors and industrial materials
Personal protective equipment (PPE) required per safety guidelines
Overtime and weekend work may be required during production peaks or tooling downtime
Performance Expectations
Accuracy and quality of tooling repairs and maintenance
Timeliness and completeness of documentation and die history updates
Compliance with safety, quality, and preventive maintenance procedures
