Position Summary:
The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of quality biological specimens for laboratory testing, distribution of specimens to proper departments, and proper preparation and handling of specimens for laboratory analysis. Provides superior customer service by maintaining positive relations with patients during invasive procedures. Responds to the needs of customers of all ages and helps to resolve exceptions. Helps maintain laboratory market share with direct, professional communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and medical departments and outreach customers. Educates patients and other laboratory clients in proper test protocol.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Accurately interprets physician orders to collect high quality specimens.
- Performs invasive procedures including venipuncture, micro-capillary collections, central line draws (where applicable) and other test procedures on patients of all age groups by following exact protocols and procedures, including patient preparation prior to testing and administration of various glucose dosages.
- Handles specimens including selection of the appropriate specimen type to ensure high quality, reliable test results.
- Provides the timely distribution of specimens to ensure the shortest possible turnaround time in order to reduce expenses within medical departments and improve patient care.
- Communicates with and prepares esoteric specimens for shipment to reference laboratories.
- Maintains specimen integrity.
- Follows patient registration procedures where required.
- Follows strict identification policies to accurately identify specimens.
- Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control practices and policies.
- Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
- Adheres to all laboratory policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability and competence in treating patients who range in age from birth to 100+ years.
- Communication, customer service, and organizational skills required.
- Knowledge of and ability to use multiple functions in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS), reference lab computers and Electronic Medical Records Systems.
- Use the LIS computer to schedule work load and inpatient rounds; interprets test orders and places them into the computer, retrieves billing information and assists with patient registration, communicates test results according to strict confidentiality standards.
- Maintains confidentiality of all medical information. Adheres to all Federal CLIA, CAP, and OSHA regulations.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times.
- Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Direct contact with Nimkee medical staff for follow-up care, referrals and services.
- Direct contact with clients to provide services.
- Contact with tribal department and outside providers for coordination of care.
- Contact with Receptionist and Secretary for the purpose of sign up of client appointments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age
- High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent
- Completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical (on-the-job) experience, has equivalent education, or a minimum of 3-4 years of professional phlebotomy experience.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Phlebotomist certification; completed a state-approved training program, earn a certificate of completion, and successfully passed a national certification exam; NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) ; ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT)
- Experience with digital Literacy; keyboarding and data entry into electronic medical records (EMR) systems, preferably Epic.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- Ability to obtain HIPAA Certification, Blood Borne Pathogens Certification, BLS, CPR Certification and OSHA Safety Training within thirty days of hire.
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of health care technology, equipment, supplies and materials needed for medical treatment.
- Knowledge; familiarity with basic anatomy, medical terminology, and calculating blood quantities.
- Knowledge of specimen integrity guidelines.
- Knowledge of laboratory test and medical terminology.
- Knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Knowledge of Medical Devices; centrifuges, vacutainer systems, and butterfly needles.
- Knowledge of and Skill in Digital Literacy; keyboarding and data entry into electronic medical records (EMR) systems like Epic.
- Skill in excellent customer service and bedside manner; empathy, compassion, and the ability to ease anxious patients during draws.
- Skill in Communication Skills; able to clearly explain procedures to patients and coordinating with laboratory or hospital staff.
- Skill in Detail-Orientation; absolute accuracy in identifying patient identity and matching sample labels to avoid mislabeling.
- Skill in Venipuncture & Capillary Puncture; proficient in drawing blood through needle, syringe, and vacutainer or butterfly methods
- Skill in Specimen Processing; proficient in accessioning samples, preparing, and properly labeling tubes with patient demographics.
- Skill in Infection Control; strict adherence to OSHA and HIPAA safety guidelines, biohazard disposal, and sanitation
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Electronic Medical Records (EMR and EHR).
- Ability to treat patients with tact, courtesy, and respect.
- Ability to react quickly and make effective decisions in an emergency situation.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

Physical Demands:
- Must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
- Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
- Required to sit for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally walk and stand and reach with arms and hands.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
- Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
