BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY

Performs advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Work involves coordinating the installation, replacement, and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. Reports to Electro-mechanical Supervisor and works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Work Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 10-hour days, 40 hours/week

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure all electrical systems meet safety codes and support the integrity of secure environments, including data centers, communication hubs, and operational facilities.
  • Implement protective measures such as surge protection, grounding, and secure conduit routing to prevent unauthorized access or system compromise.
  • Collaborate with IT, cybersecurity, and facilities teams to align electrical infrastructure with agency-wide security frameworks (e.g., NIST, NFPA 70E).
  • Document electrical configurations, service logs, and compliance activities in accordance with TMD policy.
  • Coordinate the installation, replacement, and maintenance of electrical systems, apparatus, circuits, and electrical components of machinery and equipment.
  • Coordinate the inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits.
  • Develop plans and specifications of maintenance and renovation projects.
  • Estimate time and material used on projects.
  • Review the layout of electrical wiring to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service to equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate the installation of electrical systems.
  • Plan long-range electrical maintenance programs.
  • Assist Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) section with mechanical and electrical projects.
  • Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Air Force safety standards.
  • Adhere to standby schedule and respond to emergency after hours calls.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Attend work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
  • May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (GED) is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Vocational or special training in an electrical trade is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years' experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment is required.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications to include Outlook, Excel and Word is required.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with variable frequency drives (VFD) troubleshooting/operations is preferred.
  • Experience with solar power operations is preferred.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:

  • Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)/State Electrical License is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is required. *The ability to obtain a Texas Driver’s License will be required within the first 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Background Investigation. Selected candidate must pass an initial criminal history check and review of foreign adversary connections that might prevent them from being able to maintain the security or integrity and periodic reviews throughout employment.
  • In accordance with Executive Order GA-48, Texas Military Department (TMD) employees are prohibited from current employment or ongoing business relationships with any entity identified on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List (15 C.F.R. 791.4) or any governmental entity or political apparatus of a country listed therein.
  • The selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for background investigations.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.-The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • general principles and theory of electricity and of safety regulations;
  • electrical, power production, and HVAC/R systems, to include VAVs;
  • knowledge of power production and high voltage systems;
  • building/electrical diagram usage;
  • electrical preventative maintenance;
  • basic electrical controls and troubleshooting;
  • grounding/lightening protection;
  • transformer, switch and motor parts and operations; and
  • (OSHA) and state electrical safety practices.

Skill in:

  • using tools to include electrical meters, fuse pullers and electrical troubleshooting;
  • communicating effectively both orally and in writing;
  • verbally expressing information in a clear and concise manner;
  • lock out tag out procedures;
  • assessing building interior/exterior lighting, as well as safety lighting; and
  • prioritizing and executing electrical work orders and training.

Ability to:

  • maintain the security and integrity of the Texas Military Department Infrastructure;
  • make maintenance or electrical repairs;
  • manage section work order;
  • work with all other trades and sections;
  • communicate effectively;
  • diagnose malfunctioning units;
  • serve as a lead worker providing direction to others;
  • asses building and electrical diagrams;
  • attend and stay current with Air Force Lightning Protection and Grounding training requirements, including but not limited to annual refresher training;
  • adhere to OSHA and Air Force safety practices;
  • direct contractors on repair needs and on power outages; and
  • work in a military environment.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed generally outside. Work typically involves stooping, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, reaching, crouching, with good color vision and depth perception. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment and materials that weigh up to 40 pounds. Works inside and outside in areas that are usually dusty, dirty, or greasy, and often works in inclement weather conditions. May be required to travel up to 10% of the time.
