Job Description

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Tire Service Worker in the Fleet Management department. The Tire Service Worker performs responsible semiskilled work repairing various types of tires including off road service, on road service of tires, wheels; does related work as required. The work in this class involves responsibility for repairing and replacing tires on all city owned vehicles and equipment.

Essential Functions of Position:

  • works as a tire service mechanic, replaces tires, wheels, studs, locks on split rim and single piece rims;
  • repairs tubes, plug tubeless type tires and radial tires;
  • stock and maintain accurate tire inventory;
  • balances tires, straightens rims on minor damaged rims, mounts and dismounts tires of all types and sizes;
  • removes, repairs and replaces tires on cars, trucks, buses, light, medium and heavy equipment;
  • inspects tires for proper tread depths;
  • checks all vehicles and equipment for tire wear, sort and inspect tires and supplies,
  • operates crane and portable tools, repair or replace tires in the field;
  • repair tire pressure monitoring systems (TPS) as needed;
  • picks up tires and supplies from vendors;
  • maintains daily log on all activity;
  • fills out work orders on all requested repairs;
  • cleans and maintains work area;
  • sorts and disposes of non-serviceable tires;
  • services and maintains air compressors and accessories;
  • performs related tasks as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of wheeled vehicles and equipment, some knowledge of tire repair including on/off road tires; some knowledge of air tools, hazards and safety factors related to tire maintenance, knowledge of scan tool use for the purpose of programming and repairing Tire Monitoring System (TPS), ability to carry out oral and written instructions, ability to keep simple records. Ability to drive standard transmission vehicles. Dexterity to operate machinery.

Acceptable Experience and Training: Completion of high school or GED, preferably vocational school training and some experience in tire maintenance and repair, some experience with operation of truck and car changer, experience in computer wheel balancing and spin balancing, some experience of crane trucks or boom trucks, or any combination of experience or training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Tennessee. Pre-employment physical, and background check required.
