Job Description

Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city, and public transport is vital to keeping it moving. Since 2009, Metro has proudly operated and maintained a world-class train service and delivered major transport projects that shape the future of our city. Guided by our value of Safely Always, we are one team dedicated to ensuring everyone gets home safely while helping to connect and create a better Melbourne.

We’re looking for a technically skilled and solutions-focused professional to join our Operational Planning team, reporting to the Head of Operational Planning.

In this role, you’ll develop and enhance automated solutions that validate timetable data, strengthen assurance processes and improve data integrity across the network. Combining data analytics, automation and problem-solving, you’ll turn complex timetable data into reliable insights and smarter solutions that support operational decision-making.

Why Metro?

  • Work for a multi-award-winning rail operator with rewarding career opportunities and the support and training to take your career to the next level.
  • Be part of an inclusive, diverse and supportive workplace.
  • All eligible Metro employees receive a free Myki Pass, allowing free public transport travel across Victoria.
  • Access a wide range of corporate discounts, including healthcare, fitness, finance and more.
  • Join a team making a real difference to Melbourne's rail network and the communities we serve.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing and automating timetable business assurance and validation rules.
  • Designing database, dashboard and reporting solutions to improve data quality and assurance.
  • Analysing timetable data to identify compliance issues, performance trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Partnering with scheduling teams and subject matter experts to develop and refine business rules.
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement across timetable assurance processes.
  • Ensuring solutions align with data governance and information management standards.

About You

You’re an analytical and solutions-focused professional who enjoys working with complex data and identifying practical ways to improve systems and processes through automation.

You’ll bring SQL capability, experience working with data architecture and database solutions, and demonstrated experience in automating business rules or developing analytical tools.

We’re looking for someone who can bring a combination of the following:

  • Excel and Power BI capability
  • Experience in data validation, quality assurance, analytics and reporting
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities with attention to detail
  • The ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with technical and operational stakeholders
  • A commitment to continuous improvement, with the ability to work independently and take responsibility for delivering outcomes

A tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related discipline, experience within the rail or transport industry, and exposure to project delivery methodologies would be advantageous but are not essential.

If you don’t meet every requirement but believe your skills and experience could transfer well to this role, we encourage you to apply.

This is an opportunity to apply your SQL, data analytics and automation expertise within a complex operational environment, developing solutions that contribute directly to the reliability and performance of Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network.

Next Steps

If this opportunity aligns with your experience and career aspirations, we encourage you to apply by submitting your resume and cover letter outlining your relevant skills and experience.
