Job Description

The Thermodynamic Engineer II is a key member of the Engineering to Order (ETO) and Special Feature Authorization (SFA) team within the Thermal Management Engineering R&D Department. The role encompasses the full lifecycle of special Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) projects, from initial quotation and feasibility assessment to detailed design, engineering, and implementation.

The engineer works closely with mechanical and electrical colleagues within the SFA/ETO team and with Application Engineers to ensure that customer-specific units are accurately designed, engineered, and delivered on time. Responsibilities include preparing technical and cost proposals, performing thermodynamic calculations, selecting components, and ensuring compliance with customer requirements and company standards. The role is central to enabling customized, engineered-to-order solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a fast and customer focused response on “engineered to order complex” (ETO-C) projects, where a new solution is based on an existing and well proven platform.
  • Collaborate with Application Engineers to understand customer requirements and propose solutions that balance performance and cost.
  • Perform quotation and cost evaluation for customer-requested modifications to the standard product.
  • Operational responsibility for the thermodynamic design & selection (GRS/rating tool) and provide thermal numerical calculations of specific projects.
  • Design and optimize the main components of CDU for data center, ensuring optimal thermodynamic performance and energy efficiency.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical team members for the implementation of approved special units.
  • Ensure that design solutions meet standards for quality, reliability, cost, and delivery time.
  • Develop and manage 3D models, 2D drawings, and product documentation using PTC Creo and PLM tools.
  • Coordinate BoM creation, product release activities, and Engineering Change Orders using PLM tools

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a degree with a thermodynamic background.
  • 5+ years of experience in chiller or liquid HVAC system design, preferably for data center applications.
  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamic and refrigeration principles, with focus on high-reliability performance.
  • Experience with BOM (Bill of Materials) management.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, PTC Creo (preferred), NX).
  • Ability to analyze customer requests and develop customized solutions.
  • Experience with full product lifecycle management, Lean/Six Sigma concepts preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; effective collaboration within the SFA team and with other departments.
  • Results-oriented, detail-focused, and team player.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to complex requests.
  • Willingness to travel if required.
