Your Job

Lead Mechanical and thermal architecture, design, and delivery for optical modules (with emphasis on Coherent modules). Drive cross-functional engineering efforts from concept, simulation, prototyping, validation, to volume production. Ensure product thermal performance, mechanical integrity, manufacturability, cost efficiency, and reliability.

What You Will Do

1. Define and lead mechanical and thermal design strategy for optical modules, including coherent modules; set technical direction and key design decisions.

2. Perform and lead thermal and mechanical analyses using CFD/FEA tools; drive optimization of heat paths, airflow, and mechanical stiffness.

3. Design and specify thermal solutions: heat spreaders, heat sinks, TIMs, thermal vias, airflow channels, enclosure thermal architecture, and mechanical packaging for robust operation.

4. Lead prototype fabrication, develop thermal test plans (environmental chamber tests, thermal resistance, thermal imaging, temperature rise), analyze results, and iterate designs.

5. Collaborate closely with optical, electrical, firmware, manufacturing, test, and supply chain teams to balance thermal/mechanical performance, cost, and manufacturability.

6. Create and maintain thermal/structural design standards, reliability and qualification plans, DFMEA, design checklists, and verification protocols.

7. Evaluate and manage suppliers for thermal materials and critical mechanical components; lead

technical supplier qualification.

8. Mentor and grow engineering team members; lead technical documentation, patents, and knowledge transfer, Participate as technical lead in program reviews (requirements, design reviews, production readiness reviews).

SCOPE: Position to develop / support new and existing products that meet or exceed customer

expectations. Support PMs and manager on all projects in development to generate revenue

and growth for Business Unit. Review designs and provide assistance as needed.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

EDUCATION:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in engineering

WORK EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED: 15+ years of mechanical and thermal design experience in optical communications, data communications modules, or comparable high-density thermal packaging products.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

REQUIRED: • Deep understanding of optical module mechanical design and manufacturing (precision machining, micro-assembly, tolerancing, assembly/process constraints).

• Extensive hands-on experience with thermal analysis and optimization using ANSYS (Fluent/Mechanical), COMSOL, IcePak, or equivalent CFD/FEA tools.

• Proficient in CAD modelling and assembly (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or equivalent).

• Proven thermal testing knowledge: thermal imaging, environmental chamber testing, temperature sensors, thermal resistance/contact resistance measurements, and test plan development.

• Strong experience with reliability standards and qualification methods (e.g., Telcordia, IEC) and failure analysis workflows.

• Excellent cross-functional communication, leadership, and project management skills; able to drive multiple projects concurrently.

• Proficient English reading/writing/speaking for technical communication and supplier interactions.

• Direct experience with 1.6T Coherent optical module mechanical and thermal

development is highly desirable.

PREFERRED:

• Led full lifecycle development of 1.6T (or similar high-power coherent) optical modules from concept to production.

• Experience selecting and evaluating TIMs, phase-change materials, and soldered thermal paths at die/package/module level.

• Patents or peer-reviewed publications in thermal management, packaging, or optical module design.

• Experience with international program management and supply chain qualification.
