Job Description

The Teacher Assistant (TIS) is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in supervising children to ensure their safety and well being; providing instruction and facilitation to groups and individual children under the direction of the Teacher; and collaborating with the Teacher to assess the strengths and needs of children and design appropriate classroom activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist teacher in any way possible, which may include, but is not necessarily limited to: a.Plan activities for assigned groups or individual children. b.Implement the daily schedule as assigned. c.Decorate the room with bulletin boards, pictures, children's artwork, and other hangings. d.Serve breakfast, lunches, and snacks. e.Help with materials and room clean-up and organization.
  • Provide nurturing and supportive environment for children, using positive behavior interventions and preventative strategies to manage classroom behavior.
  • Complete required number of training hours each year by attending in-house in-services and local workshops and trainings.
  • Assume temporary responsibilities of the teacher in her/his absence.
  • Report any special needs or problems of individual children to the classroom teacher.
  • Work with children who have special health care needs, supporting the teacher
  • Report any cases of suspected child abuse and/or neglect to Director or make a direct call to DCYF(1-800-RICHILD).
  • Assistants must be able to follow 4 month rotating work schedule of 8.5 hours within the times the center is open (7:00 am – 5:30 pm).


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and/or Experience – High School Diploma or High School Equivalency required.
  • Some college credit in the fields of early childhood, special education, or psychology preferred.
  • At least 1-year supervised experience working with children with special needs, including social/emotional disorders and/or developmental disabilities in a typical childcare program.

Pay Range:

$18.00-$25.82
