  • Monitor and document resident safety, child well-being, and overall progress through structured tools and ongoing observation.
  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, mediation, and conflict resolution support as needed.
  • Build rapport with residents using a trauma-informed, youth-centered approach while promoting accountability and restorative practices.
  • Coordinate and facilitate life-skills workshops, programming, youth meetings, and community-building activities.
  • Support all aspects of program operations, including intakes, move-ins, exits, and preparation of resident spaces and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress notes, incident reports, program logs, and data entry in HMIS and internal trackers.
  • Oversee daily site operations, ensuring safety, cleanliness, organization, and adherence to house expectations.
  • Conduct routine house inspections and manage inventory of supplies, including food, cleaning items, and program materials.
  • Coordinate food resources, including meal support and pantry access for residents.
  • Maintain and update community resources, provide referrals, and coordinate services with external partners and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and departments to ensure continuity of care and effective service delivery.
  • Schedule and support transportation for residents to appointments, services, and activities; transport residents as authorized.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings, committees, trainings, and emergency preparedness activities (e.g., drills).
  • Assist with program reporting, outcome tracking, and data collection requirements.
  • Perform site-related errands (e.g., supply pick-ups) and support overall program needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in alignment with program and organizational needs, including the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Safe Place for Youth

About Safe Place for Youth

Safe Place for Youth was founded in 2011 by a group of dedicated volunteers and Founder/Executive Director Alison Hurst, offering hot food, clothing, and socks to homeless youth in Venice Beach from their cars. Since those humble beginnings, we've been driven to give youth opportunities to transform by multiplying our services, building our programming, and strengthening our partnerships. With incredible support from Board Members, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations, SPY has grown from a 100% volunteer-led organization to a professional staff of approximately 60 employees, whose skill sets have strengthened our programs.

In April 2015, we moved into our own building in Venice, giving us the opportunity to expand programs, address youth needs, and partner with local specialty service providers. The timing of our expansion is significant. In Los Angeles, there is a real urgency in addressing the issues of homelessness and SPY stays centrally involved in the discussions impacting policy change. The reality is that the numbers of homeless youth have increased to epidemic proportions, which means we must respond to the crisis by continuing to grow our programs and maintaining our leadership role with coalition groups working to end youth homelessness.

Our mission is to empower young people experiencing homelessness to thrive by providing lasting, community-driven solutions that address racial and social inequity.
