About Us:

Psychiatry UK is the UK’s leading provider of digital psychiatry services, working both privately and with the NHS to support children, teenagers and adults with expert, patient-centred care.

A career with Psychiatry UK allows you to expand your knowledge, enhance your skills, and gain valuable life experience—all while enjoying the flexibility of a remote full-time role. As part of a leading online mental health service, you'll collaborate with innovative, forward-thinking professionals in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team committed to making a real difference.

As our Test Automation Lead, you will define and drive our test automation strategy, working closely with the Head of Engineering to build organisation-wide support and encourage adoption across all teams that deliver software. You will collaborate with engineers, Quality Engineers, and data scientists, while partnering with product managers, clinicians, and the Information Governance team to help ensure our systems remain robust, reliable, and safe for the patients who rely on them.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you will lead through expertise and influence. You will own and evolve our automation frameworks, increasing their adoption across teams, developing automation capability, and helping establish automated testing as a consistent, shared practice. Our teams bring extensive product and domain expertise, and your automation leadership will enhance and scale our testing approach as the platform continues to grow.

This is a home-based role (applicants must reside in the UK), though occasional travel may be required for face-to-face meetings at various locations within the UK.

As our Test Automation Lead, you will:

  • Define and lead an organisation-wide test automation strategy, securing stakeholder buy-in and driving adoption across engineering teams.

  • Build and maintain scalable, reusable automated test frameworks using Playwright, Jest, and pytest.

  • Enable delivery teams to create and own automated tests while Quality Engineers retain ownership of test design, scenarios, and plans.

  • Coordinate testing activities across web applications, APIs, data platforms, and integrated systems.

  • Implement and manage test management tools to support planning, execution, reporting, and traceability.

  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, monitor test health, and ensure reliable feedback loops.

  • Establish automated coverage for non-functional requirements, including performance, accessibility (WCAG), and regression testing.

  • Champion quality engineering best practices, promoting automation, unit testing, and continuous improvement across teams.

  • Contribute to release planning, risk assessment, and quality metrics reporting to support informed delivery decisions.

  • Support AI/ML, data pipeline, and analytics testing while implementing synthetic test data strategies and privacy-by-design practices that avoid the use of real patient data.

To succeed as our Test Automation Lead, you will have:

  • Proven experience in software testing, with at least 2 years in a test leadership role.

  • Strong hands-on experience with test automation tools, preferably Playwright.

  • Proficiency in TypeScript and/or Python.

  • Solid understanding of QA methodologies, test planning, and risk-based testing.

  • Experience with unit testing frameworks such as pytest and Jest.

  • Experience testing web applications, REST APIs, and ideally data pipelines.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Able to influence, build consensus, and drive adoption across teams without direct authority.

  • A coaching and enabling style, comfortable upskilling engineers and quality colleagues.

  • Pragmatic and delivery-focused, balancing rigour against shipping.

  • Experience with test data management, including synthetic or seeded test data.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working in regulated environments, ideally within healthcare or NHS digital services.

  • Experience testing machine learning or generative AI applications.

  • Familiarity with data quality testing, ETL pipelines, and report validation.

  • Knowledge of performance, load, accessibility (e.g. WCAG, axe), or security testing tools.
