Job Description

A term adjunct position is open at the Smith School of Business for an instructor to teach at our main campus in Kingston, in a lecture-style undergraduate course in the Commerce program. The position is to teach Principles of Economics for Business – COMM 171 in the fall term. There are multiple sections of this course available. Teaching one (1) section of Comm 171 will generally entail teaching 3 hours per week, in either two 1.5 hour sessions per week (24 classes in a term), or one 3 hour session per week (12 classes in a term),from September to December 2026. The successful applicant will be required to teach 100% of one or more sections of COMM 171, with a maximum enrollment of 89 students.

Course Description

This course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts in microeconomics and macroeconomics. The microeconomics part will cover concepts such as consumer behavior, supply and demand interaction, and the effects of government interventions (e.g. taxes, subsidies, and environmental policies) on market outcomes and economic efficiency. These concepts build the foundation for COMM 172 (Managerial Economics), which focuses on economic decision making within a business context. The topics covered in the macroeconomics part (15 lectures) include national output and income, the economy in the short vs. long run, banking and monetary policies, labour markets, asset pricing in stock and real-estate markets, and international trade.

The open sections for COMM 171 have been scheduled in the Fall term as follows:

Sections:

001 – Mondays: 6:30 - 9:00
002 – Wednesdays: 6:30 - 9:30
007 – Tuesdays: 8:30 - 11:30

Compensation

The salary for a term adjunct teaching one section of a course in our Commerce program is $13,856 (excluding vacation pay). This salary is pro-rated based on course credit.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a Master’s degree or PhD; several years of related experience; and experience teaching university courses.
