
The College of Architecture at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time, tenured Professor to serve as Department Head for the Department of Construction Science and hold the Charles Dewey McMullan Endowed Chair in Construction Science with an 11-month academic appointment expected to begin Summer/Fall 2027. The candidate’s tenure review will follow the University’s Tenure Review Upon Hire (TRUH) process.
The Department Head of Construction Science provides strategic academic and administrative leadership to advance the department’s mission, vision, and long-term goals. The Department Head oversees faculty, staff, academic programs, research, industry and community engagement, departmental operations, and budget and resource management, while supporting continued growth and innovation, in alignment with college and university priorities. This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Architecture, and works collaboratively with other department heads, associate/assistant deans, and the broader college leadership as appropriate.
The ideal candidate should meet expectations for tenured faculty across teaching, research/scholarship, and service, and have a distinguished record of accomplishment and experience in academic leadership. Industry experience is preferred. Detailed expectations and qualifications of the department head are included below.
While the leadership position involves primarily administrative responsibilities, the successful candidate must meet the following requirements as a tenured Professor.
The Department of Construction Science is one of the largest and most renowned programs in construction higher education. The Department offers STEM degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. The undergraduate program in Construction Science has been continuously accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) since 1978. In 2012, the master’s program in Construction Management became one of the first graduate programs accredited by ACCE.
Recently, the Department has significantly expanded its academic portfolio. The bachelor’s program now enrolls students at the Higher Education Center at McAllen. The master’s program includes an online delivery. Its doctoral program, approved in 2021, is the first in Texas and offers three concentration areas; i) construction management and safety, ii) smart construction, and iii) sustainable construction to meet the rapid changes and demands of the construction industry and academia.
As of Fall 2026, the Department has (1) a student population composed of 1,358 undergraduate students, 143 master’s students, and 52 Ph.D. students; (2) over 70 faculty and staff members; (3) a Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), composed of over 350 firms from various AEC/FM domains; and (4) eight endowed professorships. Each year, the Department awards more than $500,000 in scholarships through the support of its partners and conducts the largest department-level career fair at Texas A&M University. Its annual research expenditure exceeds $5 million, and all its Ph.D. students are fully funded.
