
Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in AI and Dentistry in the Faculty of Dentistry and the School of Computing and Data Science (Ref.: 536456), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure prior to the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract, subject to satisfactory performance.
The Faculty of Dentistry is the only dental school in Hong Kong SAR and the only one in China that uses English as the medium of instruction. The high quality of the Faculty’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, research excellence, knowledge exchange (KE) and clinical/professional services have attained global recognition, as evidenced by the Faculty’s global rankings among the top three by the QS World University Rankings by Subject for ten out of the past twelve years (2015-2026). The Faculty’s strategic research themes include AI+ & Precision Dentistry, Regenerative Dentistry, Global Oral Health, and Oral Ecosystem & One Health. The Faculty also plays important roles in public and professional education through its KE activities and Global Education Hub for Oral Healthcare Professionals, translational research & innovation via its Global Hub for Future Dentistry, and enhancement of its global impacts through proactive engagement, networking and partnership.
The School of Computing and Data Science (SCDS) strives to advance education and research across the fields of computing and data science, artificial intelligence (AI), statistical decision sciences, fintech, and actuarial science. It aims to take an integrated approach to reforming these academic disciplines and fostering multidisciplinary research collaboration within the University and beyond. SCDS is ranked 18th globally in Data Science and AI, 27th in Computer Science and Information Systems, and 32nd in Statistics and Operational Research in the QS World University Rankings.
Applicants should possess a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification in AI, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with a strong research focus on the application of AI to dentistry. They should have:
The appointee will engage in didactic teaching related to AI applications in dentistry and/or biomedical/computer science related to AI; supervise research projects and develop independent research; assist in the development of AI algorithms across various dental disciplines; and participate in KE and administrative duties of the Faculty. He/she is also expected to work collaboratively in a dynamic and diverse environment, develop a competitive research portfolio, and contribute to the curricula available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The appointee will also be a member of the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU-IDS) under this joint appointment.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.
