Highview Power Carrington – LAES Project (FOAK)
50MW / 300MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage Facility | Greater Manchester

First‑of‑a‑kind, commercial‑scale greenfield delivery of a 50MW / 300MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, supporting long‑duration energy storage and the UK’s net‑zero transition.

The project utilises proprietary LAES technology, converting surplus renewable electricity into stored liquid air, with later pressurisation and reheating to drive turbines for electricity generation.

Role / Scope (Bilfinger UK):

  • Principal contractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation (MEI) construction, including structural steelwork
  • Delivery of complex, safety‑critical systems within a novel technology environment
  • Working within a large high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary integrated delivery team on a technically challenging FOAK scheme

A landmark project combining innovation, engineering excellence, and collaboration to deliver one of the UK’s most advanced energy storage assets.

The Role

As a Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) your role is to ensure that all non-permanent works such as temporary power, lighting, fencing, access, structures, scaffolding, formwork, shoring, are safely and efficiently planned, designed, checked, and erected. The TWC ensures adherence to design and safety standards, conducts risk assessments, monitors temporary works, and coordinates with various stakeholders to maintain structural integrity and project efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Planning:

Overseeing the preparation of suitable temporary works designs and ensuring they are checked for safety and compliance.

Risk Management:

Identifying and mitigating risks associated with temporary works by way of RAMS.

On-Site Supervision:

Monitoring the erection and use of temporary works to ensure they are built and maintained correctly.

Compliance:

Making sure all temporary works meet relevant health and safety regulations and industry standards.

Coordination:

Liaising with designers, engineers, site teams, and other contractors to ensure temporary works don't compromise the main construction.

Documentation:

Maintaining records of designs, checks, and any alterations to temporary works.

Stopping Work:

Having the authority to stop work if temporary works are not satisfactory or safe.

Importance of a TWC

The TWC plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and structural failures that can result from poorly designed or executed temporary works. By ensuring proper management of these non-permanent elements, the TWC contributes to the overall safety, efficiency, and success of a construction project.
