Position Purpose summary:

The Summer Youth Program Assistant will help to organize and facilitate local opportunities for youth to socialize and volunteer in the community over the summer. They will also coordinate sending 30-40 local youth attending an overnight camp, as well as coordinate transportation to the camp. The successful incumbent will also attend these camps with the youth, and serve on the camp staff for the duration of the camp. The incumbent will be working out of our church location at 1480 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, B.C.

This a Fixed Term Contract Position.

Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements apply. Individuals who required employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria.

BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in organizing and hosting activities for youth such as crafts, cooking, games, sports, etc.
  • Assist in organizing and hosting volunteering opportunities for high school students at the Thrift Store
  • assist with the planning and supervision of field trips and special events (i.e. beach days)
  • Assist with the planning and transportation for teens to field trips and special events
  • Set up and clean up for youth programs
  • Arrange transportation for campers (free of cost)
  • Travel with campers to and from camp, and supervise them while at camp
  • Provide regular emails to families of children and youth who will be attending camp
  • Plan and facilitate pre-camp and post-camp gatherings
  • Recruit and support volunteers for summer youth programing
  • Connect with parents of youth with relevant information regarding activities
  • Shop and prepare food for youth programs
  • Reconcile expenses for youth programming
  • Offer some administrative support to the church office staff
  • Other duties as assigned

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: none

Internal:

  • Ministry Unit management, Officer
  • Divisional Headquarters - Area Commander, DHQ Youth Department, Regional Youth Coordinator
  • Territorial Headquarters – Territorial Youth Department, Territorial Abuse Advisor

External:

  • Okanagan Central Youth Pastor’s networks, Child Protection Agencies (as needed)

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to Corps Officer.
  • Direct reports: None.
  • Workflow coordinator. May supervise volunteers serving with youth.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:

  • Monitors spending for the programs overseen.
  • Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of resources.
  • May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
  • Minimal material responsibility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Serves in a church office environment. The location of work may create a possibility of experiencing the following disagreeable conditions:
    • people with challenging behaviour
    • verbal abuse,
    • minor risk of harm, injury, illness due to physical attacks from others, rough play and/or exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Intervenes if participants’ behaviour changes.
  • The job includes periods planning for program delivery, which may involve computer research.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
  • Internal Child Abuse Prevention training modules to be completed during probation.
  • An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of related experience Preferred.
  • Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Secord Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Proven ability to make meaningful connections with youth and parents/caregivers.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $42,042.00 to $52,561.60 with a maximum of $63,063.00.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
